Delayed response to Jaycee:

You're right; I thought, it would be like saying, "There's no modern equivalent of Picasso". Well, no... how could there be?
When I was younger, what appealed to me wasn't just guys doing gnarly tricks. Like, Hosoi- now, I can say, Well, he was really stylish, I'm glad he's gotten his life together... But back in the day, I was like, Man, look at this guy. I liked guys who were on their own trip- Neil Blender,
Gonz, Natas, Andy Howell, etc... It seemed like, in a weird way, skateboarding was a reflection of an original, unique personality. No doubt, there are a lot of talented skateboarders today... but generally speaking, these days it seems less colorful. That's just my own personal take. I feel glad that I grew up in the era that I did.

Oh yeah, Max Schaaf was always sick. A friend of mine was in a Slam City Jam contest, and at the hotel, Max Schaaf told him that he liked a trick he had done in his run, which I thought was nice of him. He seemed like a cool, mellow guy.

I had never even heard of Max Schaaf prior to watching the Epicly Later'd videos. But then again, I have seriously been out of touch with skateboarding for the last 15 years. But hey it's never too late for a comeback. I live in the bay area and have been hitting up tons of our world class parks lately. If I see him I'll be telling him he f***in rips! Thanks for posting the cool pics.

Remember the two little kids who used to chill @ Max's ramp? Onio and Clem? They were in the Spitfire video.

"Look at him with his tight pants on!"

I wonder if those kids kept skating...

Max is dope. He keeps it real with the 4q and what not. His vert tricks are crazy. Back in the mid 90s he was pioneering the pop OUT of vert lip tricks which looked so sick and he still does it. His lastest footage with the tube socks and shorts is really cool. I haven't watched the epicly laterds because my internet sucks and I'm waiting for the dvd, but I'm sure they are great.

1st pro I ever met in my life, also the nicest to this day, it was him, ethan fowler and chris pastras came to my hometown park randomly. I was a grom, this was over 10 years ago. I had a rancid shirt on that probably went down to my knees. He skated over and said, "i like your shirt. Do you like them?" and i knew these guys were all a big deal, so all I could muster was a simple, "yes." It was a great first encounter with a professional being that young, when it matters. I'll never forget that, not many people would go out of their way just to chit chat with a little kid. major props. He was killing it in that final episode of epicly later'd. damn. great pro.

Remember that Big Brother caption about how if Max Schaaf abandoned skateboarding for porno, he could take on the stage name "Maximum Shaft"?

I still have a set of Spitfires Max gave me (unprompted) in London as he set up a board to skate the vert. A quick warm up later, he knocked out the frontside flip that's in Real To Reel.

Humble, honest, full of smiles, driven by love, super stylish - Max is the best.

I also really enjoyed his Epicly Later'd series. Probably my favorite episodes Patrick's put out yet. This was a nice cap to that - Max is fucking gnarly, a true skater keeping it real.

Ugh, don't mind the awful pun there.
