#767: super duty tough work

"Shoots, I didn’t set out to emphasize anything in particular for the Planet Earth video. I was just skating as much as I could and pushing myself to try new things for the better part of a year. I remember being pleased with most of the skating, not so pleased about some of it, and feeling a little ambivalent about my voiceover. I still like that Tron opener, though… " -Brian Lotti

"We all used to just skate all over the city together. Jovontae just had so many different interests besides skating and never got super focused on it… meaning he just did it when he wanted and when he did, he did it fucking beautiful... except for the Planet Earth video which Ternasky made him come down south to film. He filmed 98% of that in one weekend." -Mike Carroll on Jovontae Turner

Style post. Amazing. Two of the best all time.

Is that bs flip fakie manny a PE or Blind ad?

Always like the A-1 Meats one footer/melon. Indy ad one footer over the can looks amazing too.

How new is that Lotti wallride pic?

Jovontae in full pads 360 flip in cut down Vans. Great! 360 flips should be called tae flips rather than tre flips.

LOVE the racial Lench Mob as...NOT! If a white skater had done the ad it would offend everyone..not if the poor black man does it.

Racial Lynch Mob?!? Wtf?! I mean really?! Does anybody knows about the story behind this ad?? I mean, as a minority, I can see where they were coming from ... but that's one of the dumbest/ignorant skateboarding ad I've ever seen..F..ck Racism

The ad with Da Lench Mob was obviously a joke, lighten up guys.
Apperantly the rap group also got mad about it when it came out.
Chrome ball runnin' shit as usual!

Nice!
Love the Kase 2 reference in the title, I think I've watched that movie more times than the Questionable video.

A Joke?!? So you're telling me that picturing a lynching scene is nothing more than a JOKE to you guys?!

Now & Later is still one of my favorite videos. So much style and forward skating, for the time (and still today). Great post.

Coincidental timing too of this post. Alex O just posted the on video "why style matters". Great clip.

Marc McKee drew 4 or 5 ethnicity driven graphics (all Jovontae boards) about African Americans in three of them (Reward, Napping Negro, Jovontae at night)and the hanging one was the first one regarding other minorities.

McKee doesn't look white to me. I'm Asian. I'm not offended. Was Jovontae offended? I doubt it or else he wouldn't let them make 4 different boards making fun of race. If they were graphics for a white pro skater, I think that would be different. See all graphics here.

Not to derail what we should be discussing, two humans so talented and natural on skateboards that just looking at their flix is a gift, but at the time Ice Cube/Da Lench Mob were coming under fire for referring to white people as crackers etc on their albums and there were cries of reverse racism. The graphic was commenting on a controversy at the time and is obviously and over the top satire.

Now back to two of the best to have ever done it.

I think that even when I was 15 I was shaking my head at people who took those kinds of graphics seriously.

I remember my buddy was flipping through a Big Brother in an assembly in high school. A few black kids were looking over his shoulder when he turned the page to an ad for Jovontae's "Napping Negro" board. Luckily they thought it was funny. I think he was sweating bullets though.

That's what World Industries always did... they grabbed on to whatever was taboo and waved it around and laughed at people getting worked up about it. Looks like their graphics are still effective. Gotta love Rocco.

top 10 posts brah. nice one chops!

I was going to buy that Lench Mob board but the shop owner browbeat me about giving money to Rocco. Got a Willy Santos instead and it sucked!

I must say something here. Longtime lurker...never a poster...

Jovantae was such an ass. His macho bull shit down at EMB put a black eye on skateboarding. Thugs like him should be in jail.

To even put him in the same post as Brian Lotti makes me sick. Lottie was an innovator. A classy guy and someone who deserves credit.

Skateboarding is super sick.

Didn't Jovontae punch Berra in the face? Props just for that.

Always want to go skating after watching that Lotti part. Love that 180 to fakie manny to 360 shuvit out. Always wanted to learn 180 to fakie manuals. Jason Lee has a clean one.
