chrome ball incident #158: poker face

Virtual Reality-era interview with Rick Howard from Thrasher (Nov. 93). Though you'd never know it from his answers, Howard would soon shock the industry as the very next issue of Thrasher would contain Girl's first advertisement.

And a special thanks to Templeton Elliot and the Skateboard Mag staff for the awesome write-up in the December issue. So stoked.

Howard has always been so low key, from his smooth style to his industry power moves. With his "banana hands" and love of fireworks he has been a major player in the skate world.

There was an interview with Howard in an episode of epicly laterd, where he said all of his tricks in Fully Flared sucked because he "doesn't belong in the video." Obviously that was at least half-joking, but I was definitely still impressed by his part. Even if his overall amount of coverage has gone down over the years, he's still clearly holding his own.

Plus, his overall impact on the industry outside of just his skating is huge.

i'm still disappointed by what happened to ned's atomic dustbin. they should have stayed true to their original sound.

as for the ricker, dude has been killing it for a long time. his blockhead parts still get play in my vcr.

Man. I remember meeting Rick when we were like 18-19. He had come to SF with these kids from Vancouver. It was this kid Kevin Chan, this kid Ben Chibber and I think there was one other kid with them but I can't remember who that was. Kevin used to live in Daly City (right outside of SF) and he was friends with my friend Joel. So these guys came to town and we skated all over the city. Rick was on Blockhead at the time and the other guys were sponsored too. Kevin was on House of Kasai and Tracker and Ben rode for Vision. You can see his part in the Alphabet Soup video. Those guys were all good but it was apparent that Rick was special. At least I thought that. This was probably a few years before Splendid Eye Torture but probably not too many. I remember we went to skate Mike and Greg Carroll's miniramp cause Joel lived down the street from them and was friends with them. I remember Mike skated a little bit but went inside the house not too long after we got there. I remember he started vibing Rick and those guys out of his window. Funny shit looking back on that years later. We were in the Castro sometime during their stay cause we were looking for a friend that lived up there to go skate or something (no, he wasn't gay, but it was questionable back then). I remember Rick being so tripped out by the experience and I think he may have been wearing some disgust on his sleeve. For some odd reason, some guy started pissing out his window and Rick was standing right underneath it. I don't think he got hit but it was a pretty close call and pretty traumatic for Rick. I remember they took a trip to LA but I couldn't make it. Joel told me that Rick was on fire and a lot of people were talking about him.

One of my all time faves. Big ups for the mention on the 4 Star site!
