chrome ball incident #81: off the nose

Sure others explored the realm of switchstance before him (Gonz, Mullen, Andy Howell, etc.) but it was Salman that really commandeered that shit and took it to another level.

1. Classic portrait of Agah. Correct me if I'm wrong but I dont think Salman intended for this photo to be published (it was supposed to be for his mother) and promptly left Indy for Thunder as a direct result of this ad.

2. While I was never a big fan of his shoe, I did like those rugby shirts Real hooked up for him with the little embroidered camel joint on there. This switch ollie (circa '93) was bad news.

3. Now this is what I'm talking about. Sure these tricks seem commonplace now, but in '91!?! Shit... my man was breaking atoms on this one. Revolutionary.

4. This was originally going to be a Ed Templeton post but it got switched up, so this one-foot goes out to Ed. A pre-cast Salman officially breaks the chrome ball one-foot ban.*

And if you haven't gotten a hold of the new Skatebook yet, I strongly suggest you doing so. I got mine today and that joint is packed with some real jawdroppers. Recommended.

*the no one-foot law was the last standing rule of the initial three bans I pledged when first starting this blog: no late shoves (#32), no pressure flips (#78), and no one-foots (#81)...

what can i say, its total anarchy in here. (yawns)

When you one foot ollie tail grab that stylish, it's okay to post. Just don't post any benihanas, although Creager beni tail grab finger flip is pretty slick LOL

Salman was amazing. Definitely one of the first to take switch to a new level. I saw him at a Real demo in Toronto. He was definitely sick. Mad power. Super smoooooth.

haha! Yeah, Keith! I know exactly the Creager joint you're talking about! vancouver contest in 96 or 97! I've been looking for that for a minute but I don't have it!

but yeah, on a serious note, those other rules were bendable... but the day i post a benny, you have my permission to pull the plug on chrome ball. game over.

strangely enough, i couldn't find agah's real part on youtube... but i was kinda pooped by the time i got to hooking up the links so i didn't really search anywhere else.

the smart money (as always) is probably on bobshirt.

Winner of the Powell-Peralta Quartermaster cup.

Didn't he also quit skating for Jesus at some point (I'll have to dig up that Thrasher interview) only to come back as a strictly vert skater?

yeah... I think the Creager sequences were in big brother. Hard to remember back that far. IIRC, there were 2 video grabs. One was a finger flip, the other was a 180 finger flip to fakie.

The demo I spoke about... same one as the Kelch story I wrote about. In the first Real video, there was some footage from the skate park. Salman does a bs 180 backward nosegrind 180 out and Thiebaud does a long nose grind on a box.

I don't think Salman's Real part is anywhere online.

not to be a total nerd (although its admittedly a little late for that at this point) i saw the ad other day for and noticed that all three finalists of the quartermaster ended up skating for real (agah, mandoli, and devera)...

i think he did take a religious break there for a little bit... those were strangely common in the nineties.

and i cant believe someone hasn't posted salman's part anywhere. shocking.
