"I'm sitting at Phil Shao's desk trying to understand why he isn't here and the only logical reason I can think of is that he wired this world and it was time to rip somewhere else." -jake phelps

I was present when Phil did the 5-0 on the top bar at that bowl and the channel fs air in Alcobendas, I drove the hellride crew around on that spanish tour.. The 5-0 is just nuts.. I consider myself lucky to have met him, great guy.

Phil was my all-time favorite when I first started skating. Every time I think of his huge blasted back 180 in 411 opener over the 2 humps at santa rosa park (I think it was) he's my favorite all over again. Total pioneer, all terrain skateboarder. Respect.

I was lucky enough to have known Phil my sophomore year in high school when I lived in Palo Alto. I have yet to see again that much natural talent embodied in someone who is undoubtedly also one of the nicest people I have ever met. Learning that he had passed when I was on my way to his house to see him and the other folks I still talked to in CA is one of the saddest moments I can remember.
But I prefer to remember Phil doing f/s airs off an over vert extension over a dude doing a layback grind on the Redwood City mini ramp. Again and again, everytime.
Always missed. Thanks Chops.

I'm looking at the picture of that back disaster on the wooden extension on my wall right now, so raw. Amazing skater who just seemed like an all around rad person. I remember seeing a video of him and he has Suedehead by Morrissey on in the background and I was super psyched on that. RIP

Phil was golden not just at skating but everything..that fucker just wrapped up graduating from UC Berkeley before he passed on.. I remember the day I got the call from GC saying he was gone as one of the worst days in a long time...the good truly do die young...gone but never forgotten and truly missed!!!
