Can never go wrong with Ray Barbee. I met him at McGill's skateshop in the 80s when I was a squirt. Such a nice guy. He showed us a card that Powell gave him to show to cops that stated that skateboarding was his job. I always wondered if it ever got him out of a ticket.
btw Chops... I was wondering if you ever thought about doing one on Rune Glifberg. He always had such a sick style... even in the 90s when vert was not considered very cool I would always get psyched to watch him. Especially that old part where he was skating to some John Coltrane... maybe it was Africa/Brass... can't quite remember. Thanks!
bin a while since i felt the need to say anything but fuck yeah. ray rules. humble ripper. yeah... maybe not the greatest guitar player but that don't matter. when i see him skate, it makes me wanna skate. what more could you ask for. and by the way...don't hate. i CAN play guitar better. again, just sayin.
Ray rips on guitar... he may not bea a technical wizard with sweeping and high speed shredding, but his soul and love for the music really shines when he plays. Just like his skateboarding... its all about the style!
I love Ray Barbee. Such an easy style on a skateboard. Watching him skate with a smile on his face makes me remember to have fun with this. It's just skateboarding.
As for the guitar playing comments: great technical ability doesn't automatically translate to creating great music. Some of the most timeless songs aren't technically difficult. I started playing years ago, and the first songs I was able to play were from the Nirvana Nevermind album. A lot of those songs are composed of three or four chords; nothing more. Kurt Cobain wasn't a technically gifted guitar player, but he could make great songs.

Best style EVER !!! I remember watching his parts in the old powell videos as a kid and trying to emulate his style, so smooth and effortless, doing his own thing with the shifties and no complys. watching him made me want to skate with style and to do the tricks i liked not what was popular at the time =) Thank you Mr. Barbee you rule ! P.s. best freakin board graphic period. G.H.

The 1st skater that made me wanna skate down the street like it was my own park, trick to trick.
nice flashback. great pick chops!
Isn't it kind of amazing that in a scene so rife with shit talking as skateboarding no one has ever said a bad word about Ray Barbee?

anonymous, stoked on ray because he's a humble ripper, but then boasting of your superior guitar skills? conflicting. surprised by this.
chops, thanks again. ray is a true classic.
i hear ya. maybe i'm a dick but i'm kinda tired of great skaters getting a pass for their half ass guitar skills... and i never said i was humble.
Dear Anonymous 2, Please go back to not needing to say anything. Thanks!
Great post, Chops.
There's always a better guitar player out there.
But there only one R.B!
Now go back to your hole with your guitar and day dream.
I think you got a double in there Chops, just an fyi.
good looking out, ODG
thanks guys.
(ignoring the whole guitar thing)

One of the great natural styles. Nothing ever looks forced, just fluid motions. And he does it with a smile. Good stuff!
Talking about Ray's guitar playing and your own hot licks is the worst. Neil Young isn't Eddy Van Halen either.
Anyhow, this post is about skateboarding, which he excels at.
Great post.

Simple. BEST FRONT NOSESLIDE in the biz.
good interview. Skinhead story is pretty gnarly. kf wall ride. Always like that one. And the fs nollie heel over the hydrant. nice!
He's rocking those Vans Fairlane cupsoles a lot in this interview. I liked that shoe. Had the all black ones.
360 flip Firm ad. Perfect. Style master.

I love Ray's skating.
I don't love the bit where he says cats and dogs don't go to heaven. Typical christian arrogance. Shame.
I hate that frontside noseslide centre-spread on my wall for a while when I first started skating. Forgot about that one.
Hate? Jesus, I mean to type "had." POSI VIBES!
