chrome ball incident #685: aladdin sane

"The insane, on occasion, are not without their charms." -K. Vonnegut

No offense to yesterdays's post... but how Tom Penny didn't get SOTY 1995 is beyond me.

And this seems like probably the most appropriate time to wish eS a fond farewell. Thanks guys.

Chrome Ball will back on Thursday.

"(Pierre Andre) said the move will make the company more efficient and allow it to devote more resources and focus to Sole Tech’s other brands: Etnies, Emerica, Altamont and ThirtyTwo.
“It’s a very complex market right now - there are a lot of brands, and a lot of pressure on the market,” Pierre said. “We feel it's the time to simplify things.”

sad day for skateboarding, mang. no more buying 2 pairs of accells at a time - one to skate, one for chillin. and who remembers the SLB or the Sal 23, the first Koston joints.

as per thomas steven louis penny. what can i say about this cat that hasn't been written? go have a puff and watch Etnies "High Five."

That black-and-white 360 flip to fakie ad used to be taped to my refrigerator door back in 1996 or so. Wow. Thanks for the memories, Chops.

No more eS? The skateboard industry is fleeting. It doesn't seem like that long ago when eS was the shit- Koston, Creager, Menikmati... you would never imagine the company just going away.

I think Sole Tech are just focusing on their brands that appeal to the skinny jeans wearing people because that seems to be the current most popular trend.

Anyway, here's a photo of Tom Penny in RAD Magazine from 1994:

Penny... one of the sickest in the mid 90's! Can't say I'm much of a current Penny fan. I just try to remember those glory years.

The two interviews with Pierre Andre floating on the web (the one linked above and one at tws) are pretty interesting... eS has always been about tech shoes and general skate shoe innovation. And for so many years, had a super stacked team. The past several years, with the general skate shoe trend being thin vulc and simple plain designs, it's not in the spirit of eS. So instead of being leaders, they just become followers just like every other company. Maybe once the shoe trend goes back to bulk and innovation, they'll make their comeback.

Damn straight Keith! we need more tech and innovative shoes out there, bulk is the jam specially since I want to be able to skate when I'm in my 50's.

Actually, I just had the pleasure of seeing Penny at a Supra demo in London - still ripping! Sucks that eS had to go, but without question, it leaves behind some fantastic memories. I think my favourite eS ad was the Tom Penny switch crook sequence, amazing! Thanks Chops!

Skating in old school vans for 6 years in my late 20s early 30s, gave me bone spurs in my Ollie toe. This vulc craze is dangerous kids. I sure wish I'd stuck with the accels.

I agree with you, Keith, that Penny(along with Muska) were just ruling in the mid-90's. Then BA came along. But he looks sketchy to me but it's still a blast to watch.

thanks bud, so happy to see these photos. I thought I'd seen all Penny coverage but theres a few new treats for me here, so much thanks for that. maybe this is bad etiquette on a site like this but you haven't got that Penny 540 ad with es have you? All this talk of es and Penny made me think of that, would have been great to see footage but he said himself he wished he had filmed it.
