chrome ball incident #570: far gone and out

"skateboarding is a personal thing you do for yourself."

I get at least two emails weekly from people that seem to believe I have some vast treasure chest containing an infinite mountain of Matt Reason coverage...

sorry fellas, I wish there was more too.

and to whom it may concern: I'm currently late on just about everything I'm involved with right now. please don't take it personal, you're in great company.

bye.

61mm Team Wheels?!Damn, you can say that people were pretty much over bearing covers in the mid 90's
From one extreme into another...

That 411 profile throws me right back into this good time of the 90's

Are those Lampins in that top photo? Sick shoes and a sick post!

that backtail is sick!
excellent skater, such a shame he had to hang up his board

There aren't many things that make me want to grab my board and just skate down the street more than his 411 profile.

Never seen those top two shots before! I wish I had scooped up those 63mm wheels when I had the chance! Great post.

Judging by the size of the images, these weren't full page pics.

Always heard good things about Reason before he blew up. A friend of mine (RIP) who used to go on skate mission road trips had seen him a bunch back in the day and couldn't stop talking about him. iirc, he was on 777 before Acme.

that front blunt picture is amazing

Dude made Vans looks so good.

Regarding the 63mm pro wheels, Oyola also had a 63mm pro wheel on First Division. Everyone in my hometown was so psyched on Fred Gall and Ricky Oyola, the whole Timecode/Easter Exposure 3 thing in general, and we all adjusted our set ups accordingly. I wanted to outdo my friends so I got 64mm Adrenalin Roadkills. I had them on an 8 3/8 board, and of course with wheels that big you need giant riser blocks. I remember one night a guy I knew was making fun of me because I couldn't kickflip and he was like "No wonder, you're riding a snowboard." I was really pissed off, but turns out he was right.

speaking of big wheels... here's a weird story. Some distributor in Canada had a crap load of old stock Powell Peralta GBone and TBone wheels around 1992-1993. Pretty much everyone was riding 40mm wheels at the time so the distributor had the wheels shaved down and sold the new mini gbones and tbones. I saw a bunch of them at this really ghetto shop. 40mm shaved down pink and green Powell wheels. funny stuff.

I'm not sure what size wheel everyone else rides but I've basically been stuck on 52-53mm for the better part of the decade.

Damn it's been a while since a Reason post! The back-tail photo, along with that entire pro spotlight is amazing. A post consisting of only Illuminati/Silverstar ads would be dope though.

Matt reason is classic east coast.I used to love watching eastern exposure 1 and 2. Wierd because now I've been looking to get those on dvd and all I can ever find is part 3. Even articles and what not always talk about 3 and never mention 1 or 2. I'm riding spitfire classics 60 mm with 2 risers...love it. 360 flips on flat and tranny get much props with the tank I'm pushin. Cool cause I can skate fucked up spots that most people pass up.

^Who actually had parts in Eastern Exposure 1 and 2? I've heard them mentioned in passing but I don't know anything about them.

Matt Reason set up: at least 61 mm Wheels and 8.5" deck. You could roll the roughest spots, but haven´t we been riding extremer gear in the late 80´s? People loved the whole EE3, East Coast, Love Park era back in Europe. Straight clean hard street skating - Point. Miss those days a lot.
What happened to him anyway?Suddently he just vanished.

that physics ad is hilarious. the vert pro's wheel was 4 mm smaller than reason's. frank 'purkiss-rose' hirata had the catalogue's petite model at 55 mm.

people talk about how RAW the mid-'90s philly thing was, and i'm a fan to a degree, but the wheel thing was just as silly as the knigge era.

He looks kinda like Heath Kirchart in that first photo.

You know it's 'back-in-the-day' when dude got two different shots in the same clothes: 360 flip and switch front board!

Is that frontside noseslide from Big Brother?

Anonymous said...

He's not wearing the same clothes. Those two shots aren't even on the same coast, let alone same day...

Great post, CB!

Was it him or Sergei who got Lyme disease? Or is that just a ridiculous rumor that I read on slap like a decade ago...

I just got word that somebody bought Capital/Nicotine and just when I thought it was bullshit I stood corrected. Easstcoastskates.com has in stock and ready for order a shit load of capital decks and nicotine wheels!!!!!!mostly team decks for now with og graphics (re-issues) but is putting a team together. Bringin back real east coast style!!!!!I'm so psyched for this.sorry to invade this post but you guys are the only people I figured would give a fuck. Reason is a beast!!!!

"Bringin back real east coast style!!!!!" If it's not any of the original people, then what are they bringing back? I'd like to get what was supposed to come my way back in 2000...

Andy Stone said...

Dude, just checked out eastcoastskates.com and all I have to say is ARE YOU FUCKIN KIDDING ME? Whether or not what there are doing is legal or not is not really the question. I'm sure that the name was out there for sale and was purchased. But to use OUR graphics and welcome some kid back to Capital just pisses me off. I know I'm old an irrelevant but please do a little homework and do not support some hacks trying to make a buck of a lot of peoples blood sweat and tears. Where's the Ryan Hickey, Chris Keeffe, Kevin Taylor and Pep Martinez checks?

PLEASE DON'T BUY THAT SHIT. SPREAD THE WORD!!!

Holy shit!!! That site is weird all together. They are selling all kinds of old shit but the "Capital " brand somehow relates to "freestyle" skating?(mullen balarina shit)they got a dvd titled capital punishment with a bunch of names I never heard of. It has to be left over product ,the nicotine wheels look exact. I remember all those graphics. I sent them an email to find out what the fuck is goin on. Smells like trouble to me Andy

Anonymous said...

it isnt left over product. the eastcoastskates site bought the nicotine/capital name a while back and made a bunch of new product that was blatantly ripped off of the old company, like the nate sherwood pro model with the exact same graphics as an andy stone capital deck.

It was Reason who got Lymes disease.

Before you label me It would be a good idea if you knew who you are talking about. I give my life heart and my money to try and bring back what you are ripping on now. I'm loyal to everyone affiliated with capital. My name is not Agnew and what happened in the past sucks but I'm not him. This company is making a come back not because of me but because the old crew has taken me in to do what nobody else had the drive to. When you bash capital you are hating on serious talent. Nobody has forgotten what happened. Capital riders are trying to carry on your torch dude!! I think what we are doing here on the east coast is great for the skate community as a whole. And this goes out to you andy.... If you were supposed to have part of this company then call me and lets work something out. If you would like to speak to me, you obviously know how to find my site. E-mail me and I would be happy to make right what was wrong. Remember I had nothing to do with this company until 2 years ago and I was pushed by some of the early capital riders to try and make a come back. I really would like to have the support of you than be at odds. I just can't say sorry for something that I had no part of. I can ask you to be a part of it again though. The company is brand new again, maybe you can still make the impact you did in the past. We need all the support we can get. This is your chance to get back what was taken from you.

Want east coast core back?
We are bringing it with or without you.. call me.
443-348-9990 Muss.

Regards, Team Capital..

Not sure which "old crew" you're talking about.

"Remember I had nothing to do with this company until 2 years ago and I was pushed by some of the early capital riders to try and make a come back."

Which riders are you talking about?

The Capital company was established by Pep Martinez, Chris Keeffe, Kevin Taylor, myself, Ryan Hickey, John Igei, Carlos Kenner, Sean Mullendore, Matt Willigan and even Simon Lockett over there in Japan. If any of those people are the riders that you are talking about, please accept my deepest apologies.

The fact is that you could have done something original and I would give you all the well wishes in the world.
