#530: please don't eat my friends

"So I picked my board up and I ran it through the graveyard, and Stacy ran behind me with the camera. And that's the way it went."

was stoked on gino's mike v inclusion the other day and figured another vallely post was overdue...

(Rodney Smith appreciation)

still love that SMA tadpoles logo... still hate berets.

and I still really want one of those "experimental" Powell boards.

thanks everyone for all the comments and emails last week. really means alot.

I don't remember his Public Domain part being so so-so. It seemed a lot sicker back in 88. His Speed Freaks part is still awesome though.

What's the yellow thing on his butt in the first pic? Is that a knob of the fence being bonked off?

I like that pseudo sad lands pic.

Welcome back E. Let's push for the Shackle me Not twins!

Sorry to hear about your loss Chops.

Re: Mike V...another case of skateboarder turned meathead bro.Since when did it become so cool to fight and be like everyone who used to beat up on you in high school.

Sick post Chopps. Ah, Mike V. The speed freaks part almost makes me look past all the dumb shit this guy does in the current times, almost. Amazing how someone can turn into everything they once despised.

vallely might've been a much more relevant skater during the world days, but he's always been a kook. that tv ad is pathetic; he's always been trying to "prove" something, probably that the chip on his shoulder isn't so massive (it is). even his awkward, excuse-y riff on the graveyard thing way back when was weird...just move on dude.

Keith, the footage from that first picture

i do believe the experimental boards were actually just large experimental stickers...

yeah, i know fellas. i've done a few mike v posts already and it gets kinda tiresome pointing out the obvious. in a way, its kinda like a band who's first album you really liked... but they just keep on releasing stuff and seem to refuse to want to go away.

smorales, that's the arena... or at least the caption said so.

olof, i feel your pain. mike was my man too back the day.

i agree keith and sprntl, his public domain really hasn't aged that well... especially compared to how bonkers that speed freaks part is. gotta say though, some weird editing going on in that freaks clip though... cutting off tricks mid-manual and also there's that really awkward corner ollie by the fence post towards the beginning of the clip which is just weird.

anon2, that was really the first of his "chip on the shoulder" type ads.... but in mike's defense for that tv ad, he did just get done having the most powerful skateboard company in the world (one he helped build) try and destroy his career for the last two years prior to that ad. can't blame him on that one.

thanks Ricks. hope all is well. we should work on an interview or something...

keith -- regarding the butt plug: yeah, it's a knob that he smacked off the top of the post. i can't remember if he did it on purpose or if it was accidental, but it's pretty cool either way. there's footage of it too.

Best push in the business and one of the best styles ever. From Veggiemorrissey to heavy metal MMA-male in 20 years. It's sad but those chips on shoulders are powerful things.

You guys should check out his site and videos at mikevallely.com ... I had the same image of him as violent jockook. But in the weekly vids on his site (Mondays with Mike or something), he comes off as having a sense of humor about himself. He still rips (heavily favoring footplants), just did a tour with Duane Peters and Danforth and loves skateboarding and encouraging kids to skate.

I think the impression of him as mindless (but poetic!) brute, although hard to shake, is getting a little dated. Some of those fights arose from him defending skaters like Muska from frat boys and security guards, although I'm sure more often than not, he's just been violent. Think what you're gonna, but I think he seemed like a bigger kook 20, 23 years ago than he does now.

I was at the banks the day he ollied the fence. Total accident he took off the knob. I will say that was one of the rawest tricks I've ever seen in person.

Unknown said...

he's getting sued by those 'frat jocks' for starting the fight for a CKY video

still one of the best airwalk shots of all time - whatever you think of his personality, still a great skater with unique style.

Personally, I'd like to sue whoever thought tiny wheels, math problem tricks and the tent-size blue-jean white T-shirt uniforms of the early '90s were good ideas.
