chrome ball incident #512: paper towel

"That's the way I street skate. Just mess around and do stupid tricks."

You know you're going back when Madrid enters the picture...

Early street godfather, Black Label kingpin, criminally underrated "skate artist", early Rocco burn victim, slappy master... and the guy who made Cards and Gino teammates.

One of those mid-80's renaissance-type cats, Mr. John Lucero

Glad to see this still holds up.

Time to go find a curb somewhere and have some fun.

Lucero is so legit. He comes across so well in that Gino epicly later'd. Such a stand-up guy. Good for skateboarding's core.

That is going back. After I watched Future Primitive at my friend's house, we watched the Oceanside street contest: "Who do you think will win?" "Not a street skater."

That guy was my inspiration to learn slappies.

I always thought he had a killer frontside airs.

What a cool coincidence that this should show up when I'm browsing for inspiration for a grip design to do on my new Black Label crutch deck! Lucero was definitely one of those enigmatic guys that drew me to skating in the first place. I'd never seen that Schmitt video before, stoked on that, it looks like there is more, but i couldn't find it! Right, time to get the Stanley knife out and get creative. Great post by the way.

Just one look at that picture of a slappy and I turned 16 all over again.

Damn ... so good.

i never knew he was the slappy inventor!!! I wouldn't have it any other way. one of the coolest dudes ever who coincidentally owns one of the sickest companys ever.

that backside smith slappie was on my wall for years. I remember just wishing I could lock in like him and just go. Seeing him hit curbs was almost as amazing as seeing him ride vert. Nice post.

You are so right, he did come off like "Uncle John," the good ol' god father of skateboarding. Very amicable person. Loved how he gave Gino compliments for always being himself and seemed to have no hard feelings what-so-ever about the jump. Knew he was incredibly talented and just let him go for it and seemed genuinely happy to help him get his foot in the door.
