chrome ball incident #454: fashion

"It was just all experimentation."

o.g. jersey kid with the flatground wizardry... an amazing skater who found himself pigeonholed after becoming a little too synonymous with the big pants-small wheels era of the early 90s.

classic TWS spotlight from '93.

people slept on this part (including me).

and on an unrelated note: stoked on this.

Since there is an old Toy trend developing, how about some Charlie Coatney!!!

I really enjoyed reading Ron's Interview. I wish more Pro's gave interviews like this (I.E. had something to say).

It's fun to watch Ron's parts in "Da Deal Is Dead" and "Children Of The Sun", the skating is amazing. Although I kinda got thrown for a loop watching his "Children" part. I watch his "Dead" part first and I was all into the Rap song, but when I start watching his "Children" part I 'bout pissed myself laughing once the Matchbox 20 sound-a-like song started to play.

Job well done Chops!

Thanks,
Bif

I went on a tour to Hong Kong/Japan/Hawaii with him in 1993 and it was good times all around except he was always a little bit out there. While in Hawaii all of the skaters that were on tour (Stranger, Montessi, Pang) jumped off this cliff called "Spitting Caves" and Ron said he didn't wouldn't do it because he didn't want to get wet?

Ronnie was one of the most technical skaters for his day. Where the hell is he now?

bif,

pretty sure that's buffalo tom. at the time they were pretty much a hot indie band, but yer right, it sounds like some overly emotional man band you'd hear on fm radio today! hard to contemplate....

Buffalo Tom was pretty sick back then. J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr did a track with them.

Knigge had quite a few good video parts ... 1281 was pretty crazy when it came out. No idea why it's not on youtube. Haven't seen that part since 92. Children of the Sun was good too... he cleaned up good.

Giles,
Ya, I know the song from Ron's "Children Of The Sun" part is Buffalo Tom's "Porchlight". I was pointing out how funny the juxtaposition between Ron's "Da Deal Is Dead" & "Children Of The Sun" parts are. You know, going from a straight up Early-90's Rap song in "Dead" to a Mid-90's Touchy Feely song by a Matchbox-20 sound-a-like in "Children". Or should I say Matchbox-20 is a Buffalo Tom sound-a-like? At any rate, it wasn't what I was expecting to hear.

Thanks,
Mr. Bif

anon1, charlie was ill back in the day but not sure I have enough for an entire post... maybe i can think of something

thanks bif. and yeah, some of that buffalo tom material hasn't aged well at all.

much respect, jefferson. thanks for the comment man. slap ran a "where are they now" type article a few weeks back with ron... he's just over it and actually kinda seemed a little embarassed by some of his skating exploits...

this site is severely lacking in the peter bici dept... really gotta remedy that situation

thanks guys.

The "Where Are They Now" article about Ron was really good.
I have laughed so hard on this quote:

""...What about some of the weirder stuff that went on during this era?You were telling me about how Julio De La Cruz wanted to do an ollie to late ollie

()...He just wanted to try to do this trick. It looked like he had lead shoes on,like his feet were too heavy. He was ollieing off the ground just a little bit ,and then spazzing out in the air.He looked crazy.
And I was like,"Julio, what the hell is that?!"
It was an ollie to late ollie. It defies gravity. He wanted to ollie and on his way down, ollie again."

I remember Ron skating at the Eatontown Roller Rink (NJ) when they had sk8 night once a week. Ron was one of the best there, and was super cool. I remember we were all stoked when he got his part in Useless Wooden Toys. A couple years later he was among the best of the best tech heads.

I agree that its unfortunate that he's associated the huge pants, tiny wheels trend of that time. For someone as good as he was, he was pretty humble and chill. Anyone know what he's up to now?

The portrait of Ron in the leaves and noseslide were shot in 1993'. Those 2 photos were my 1st ever to be published in Transworld. Miss those days!

Glad I could add some more scans to the portfolio, Gee. I think I'm closing in on about half of your entire body of work.

Your site looks really good too.

Thanks for the comment, man.
