chrome ball incident #403: the lung
"Rob's the same person he was when he was 14, so he's just doing his thing. He's always been very business-minded and looked at skating in that fashion... He's never changed, he didn't just turn into what you see." -John Drake

"opposite-footed 180." nice.
Rob has one of the dopest 'white boy' styles in skateboarding. Despite my strong dissaproval of his capitalist-white-boy-disneyland version of skateboarding, have to say he he really smooth on his board. It's great to see these old ads and shots. How about some Ocean Howell?
How about some John Drake?
"The Lung" is still one of my favorite songs to be used in a skate video.

I totally agree. I watched Dyrdek and Pitre's Footage and Memory Screen parts 100's of times when they came out.
I see nothing wrong with Dyrdek getting paid. Some of his MTV stuff is corny and cheesy, yet entertaining. Compared to every other tv show related to skateboarding that's ever been aired (Shecks, Sk8 TV etc), IMO Dyrdek's shit is less bad.
Civic nation haha
I liked both of those guys in Footage. It's interesting how they took different paths in the world- Duane Pitre is a semi-obscure avant garde musician, and Rob Dyrdek is a semi-household name on MTV, DC commercials, etc. He was definitely a good skateboarder, and he's done well for himself. For me, though, he's one reason why I stopped wearing DC shoes. I think of him getting trick tips from Janet Jackson- "Thanks, Janet!"- and I'm like... Ugh.
In all honesty, whenever I think of my favorite skate video of all-time, video days and questionable immediately spring to mind... but only because I think of memory screen as so much more than a 'skate video'. And Rob's part in that joint always kills it for me.
One of the highlights of my teenage years was watching memory screen in a van on the way to sunsports skatepark in c-bus right when it came out. we got to the park and skated all day and were ready to leave when dyrdek and heintzman walked through the door. needless to say, we stayed and watched rob try nose manual to nollie flips out (this was 91) and also learned what that weird symbol on rob's wheels meant (plan b). always remember that shit.
Dyrdek has definitely gotten a little cornball recently with all the questionable sponsorships and MTV clowning, but one thing that I do respect is that he's using a lot of the money he's making to build incredible skate parks.
The more people like Rob, who actually have experience and love for skateboarding, pouring their assets into fun, quality skate parks/plazas the better.
I hear you, Chops. I still have a VHS copy of Memory Screen. Dyrdek and Pitre came to the Skatepark of Houston once for a Shut Up and Skate contest. Dyrdek was trying nollie heelflip noseslides down a box over and over again. When I saw the sequence in an ad a few months later I thought, I guess he finally landed it. What really stood out that day was Pitre- he did a backside 360 ollie over the pyramid in his run. He had never even tried it in practice; he just did it in his run and made it first try. Everyone was like, Damn, that was sick!
