I was at a Slam City Jam contest in Vancouver, and Ray Barbee had a really good run- he qualified first for the finals. When his run was over, the crowd was cheering for him... and so were the other pros. They stood up and applauded- that was the only time I've ever seen a standing ovation at a skateboarding contest.

Love those all black Vans he's got in pic 1 and 8. I had some of those and they were so good.
Ray Barbee rips.

Is that the contest that is in that Ray Barbee 20 years video? I remember a bunch of people giving him love and then Rickk goes for the full hug.

Ray Barbee is one of the best things about skateboarding. Him, Cardiel, Gonz and a few others just have that purity...

smorales... that contest footage is is in Europe.

Remember all those Firm boards with hand painted graphics from Lance and Ray? I saw a few at a shop back in the day. So sick! Sure they would fetch quite a bit NOS.

I really think Ray Barbee's attitude and outlook on life/skating were as influential as his skating itself.

Love that rock n' roll shot.

I've never seen the Ray Barbee video. It was the contest where Rowley did the ollie over the box to lipslide. And Ray Barbee was wearing those black Vans with the white stripe. At the time, I thought, "Damn, cool kicks." You know, I re-watched the Public Domain segment featuring Ray "Barbie". It reminded me of Ban This with Salman Agah and Jovantae Turner. I was like, What is it with Stacy Peralta and names? How hard is it to spell a guy's name right?

I'm 99% certain those black Vans with the white stripe are Fairlanes. Sick shoe back then. One of the only good cupsoles Vans ever made. I bought a pair the first time I visited nyc back in 1996.
