chrome ball incident #296: hate me now

before the bodyguards, bulldogs and bling, Rob Dyrdek was the illest. Straight up, I grew up in the general vicinity of Lil' Rob and it was not uncommon to encounter him (before he moved) on a roadtrip and gain a firsthand account of this dude absolutely ripping shit apart.

I know its easy to hate on the Viacom-steez but dude is unquestionably a smart businessman and I do feel his heart is in the right place as far as skateboarding is concerned... one look at that prominently-displayed art collection of his proves this.

Plus, beaming footage of a Kalis tre to millions of viewers on a major cable network can't be a bad thing.... especially when one considers the alternatives.

and I still think that Bobby Light shit is funny.

(update: rob's switch f/s tail down hubba hideout had to unfortunately be taken down. sorry)

Love his "Footage" and "Memory Screen" parts.

right on E! I agree with everything you've said about Dyrdek. I grew up super psyched on his Footage and Memory Screen parts.

That photo of the nose slide with the underage girl smoking... there's just something about it that makes it looks so amazing. Whoever took it, mad props.

That switch 360 flip sequence is awesome. I definitely don't remember him busting out many of those.

His years in the industry can't lie. He knows how to do it. Could have fizzled out with so many others. Props to anyone who could come up out of the OH back then.

Agree with Keith on the ns pic. pretty sic and show the times real well.

FF is kind of entertaining and the extra challenges in Skate 2 were worth it.

If you actually sit down and watch his MTV shows its pretty hard not to like the dude. Anyone thats that carefree, upbeat, and postive is ok in my book.

I think hes one of the few that seems to deserve everything he's got. Something you can't really say about another skateboarder with his own show on MTV.

I honestly have never heard anyone say a bad word about rob..
The dude seems super humble, and has fun with his money.
Always smiling and helping build parks.
He may be one of the only skaters to have a tv show, and not come off as a kook.

I honestly have not heard anyone say a good word about rob.

"The dude seems super humble."

I disagree.

glad the response on this one was (mostly) positive...

sorry to come off as kinda defensive on this one but I definitely think there's a generational gap as far as Rob is concerned, with a lot of the younger kids that aren't totally familiar with Dyrdek being quick with the knee-jerk MTV/Bam-fueled thumbs down while the older dudes know his career and can really see all the positives he's doing...

There was a time when i really wasn't for sure how to take dyrdek... slightly before the shows started when he first started getting all "iced-out" and i immediately feared for the worst. But it is good to see dude trying to do so much for skating and although most of the kids under 20 I've talked to aren't exactly the biggest fans (at least the kids in towns without skate plazas), I think Rob is solid as fuck.

Always psyched on Robby D! Was an innovator before the media blitz. Still holds it down and you can never forget his Memory Screen part.
Word to the OG's!

Where is John Drake?

Man, he was my favorite back in the day. Duane Pitre and Rob Dyrdek. I recall one old Alien Workshop deck with mice hatching out of colored eggs that I loved.

He 50-50'd a 20 stair rail several years ago for a DC spot with teenage girls chasing him like he was The Beatles or something. As soon as he landed that trick things got janky as far as I'm concerned. Diamonds and whatever the fuck else. Totally jumped the shark.

I'm still pretty stoked with his plaza building shit, though. You know?

I've got an Alien workshop ad from the early 90's with Rob nose sliding a ledge. Email me if you want it.

i was in Surf on Wyoming street when the TWS photo of him & the switch ollie down the big carlsbad gag came out. heintzman was looking at the photo and talking to no one/anyone in earshot about how bummed he was that he knew rob didn't pull it and that transworld would just run the photo because it looked decent. maybe it was jealousy, maybe he was just speaking his mind. not to get on a tangent, but i wondered/still wonder how much stuff runs that's not actually landed.

I grew up skating in Toledo, Oh. so when Alien Workshop came along my friends and I were stoked to have a ripper like Rob and the crew represent us.
Rob is still killing it!! And if folks want to hate on him for havin bling then Sheckler should be catching hell for driving a Farrari. But who are we to say how someone should spend their hard earned money?
