chrome ball incident #257: birthday cake

figured I'd go back to my roots for this special anniversary incident... and for your friend and humble narrator, it all starts here. a friend of mine's older brother brought a copy of chin home one day after school when we were in the fifth grade and my shit's never been the same since. I were literally blindsided by an entire culture that day.

word to johnny rad.

never seen this before. thank you, internet.

the chrome ball incident turns one year old today... thanks everyone. the support i've received over the last year has truly been incredible. i was gonna try and do a list but that shit was going way too long while still fearfully-incomplete.

thank you neil blender and andy jenkins.

and also, happy birthday to greyman.

Happy 1st anniversary Chrome Ball!

This is where it all started for me as well. I was cruising around on department store boards for a year or two. Then in grade 8, met this one dude who showed me Animal Chin. So crazy. Absolutely blown away. Next video I saw was Street Skating in Tempe, some random contest video.

I was also in grade 8 and remember seeing this video in my local skate/surf store in Tasmania (AUS). It was a big jump from Future Primitive. Always wanted to go to Wallows. Happy 1st b'day.

NICE! Such a great post, glad you're back and Happy Anniversary! Future Primitive was the first video I saw, but Chin was next...I still remember Tommy's rap, so surreal...

Great anniversary post! Been a great year of following this. Thanks for a great way to kill time. Need to pop in THPS 2 again and relive that ramp from the promo vid again.

Props on making it to the one year mark.

That McGill photo of him in the pool is awesome. He looks like Corey Duffel.

great anniversary post, congrats.

In Costa Rica, Animal Chin arrived in a ghetto ass beta max tape that was like a 4th generation copy. And all the kids got there copy from that master copy. The impact was immediate. Little crews started popping out inspired by the camaraderie/style/trick selection of Chin (Cartago's Street Rats and San Pedro's Team Rotten being the most notorious). And yeah some parts of the movie were corny, but it was cool cause you could tell the team was aware of the corniness on camera as well.

Had not seen the article by Meza and Eisenhour, instant classic.

Is that a Gleaming the Cube era McGill pool pic? He looks all christian-slaytered out. And Tommy G's RUNDMC attire is lookin hella fresh.

got a lot of my regulars up here, thanks guys.

keith, i think street skating (style?) at tempe was my second video i saw (that or Duel at Diablo). shit seemed so exciting back then when you're young and just starting out.

jason, i used to sweat wallows so hard... kinda bummed me out that the bones brigade hated on it in the animal chin dvd special features. i guess in reality the spot really sucked and also hawk got some funky infection from that place. powell magic strikes again.

big up to vert is dead. chepesent is correct... that's mcgill doing his christian slater-stunt-double-thing. but damn... he does kinda look like duffman.

jason, thanks homie. yeah, those are by far the earliest ones i have... thanks for the offer, i've gone back and picked up the ones that i've been missing for the most part but i still don't have any pre-1990 thrashers. Let me know if you still got any and I can send you some money for shipping. Super good... I'm buggin.

chepesent, our crew was "the street brigade" haha. and yeah, early 00's skateboader is incredible.
