Julien Stranger---Tony Trujillo before Tony knew who he was....
Both are legendary, but according to popular opinion of peers, one is a big ol' dickhead...
you are killing it this week
His skypager part had to be one of my all time faves. Dan Wolfe had a ipod version up on his site last time I visited.
At least I have chromeball to get me through the lag time from putting skate2 in and getting to play
I didn't know that tobin photo of the board into the car was ran in an ad. I was seriously considering buying the full print of it but can no longer find it online.
That last one is so good.
Julian! Another one of my all time faves! Ever since I was young, seeing Julian skate was always an amazing experience. In my mind, I always thought Julian's style was what you pictured in your head when you saw someone just skating down the street. Just that perfect style. He was one of the first and few people that I ever thought, "Man, that guy's got soul when he skates!".
So growning up in SF, I would see Julian around every once in a while. He's pretty much like he was now. You'd didn't really a lot of footage or pictures, but when you did, that shit was always amazing. And when I did get to see Julian skate in person, man....like I said, soul. I remember when I first saw him skating a mini ramp. He would do the most amazing frontside ollies. It was this thing where he'd ollie and almost divebomb back in the the ramp. He'd purposely land on his front wheels right at the top of the ramp, right below the coping. I couldn't believe that he was doing that on purpose when in my mind, you'd want to do everything in your power not to hang up. But not Julian. I just remember being so amazed by that. Mind you, Natas was skating that same ramp and just destroyed it. He skated that shit like it was a bank to curb doing tricks you'd usually reserve for something like that. And Tommy was there too just skating so smooth and effortlessly. But I'll always remember watching Julian skate that ramp and just being blown away. Again, it's that soul.
And over the years I've gotten to know Julian. He's an incredibly smart guy and I think that's a driving factor into why people really like Anti Hero. I remember running into Mark Gonzales downtown one time and we ended up going skating somewhere. I remember he kept asking me where Julian was and where Julian skated. I remember not being able to really tell him where he skated cause he was all over the place. Just like now, he was pretty underground so I never knew where he really skated. He was just skating. I've heard that Julian is one of Mark's favorite skaters and it almost seemed like Mark was sweating him (if that doesn't sound too far fetched). I can't blame him though. A friend of mine was telling me onece that maybe the reason Julian looked so good when he was skating was that it seemed like his shoulders were set back a little further than normal. Same with Mike Carroll. I thought about it, and it seemed like he had a good point. Maybe you're just born with it, you know? Maybe it's something that you can't really learn? Whatever the case, I'll just call it Soul and leave it at that.
Thanks for the shout out Chops! I'll keep 'em coming if I can!
YES
that last one is so fxxing sharp
where is the fs ollie photo from? it looks relatively current. amazing post
that's awesome jaycee!
once i ran into mark in new york (we were both looking at furniture at a flea market), and i fanned out, and he asked me what board i rode, and i told him antihero, and he just immediately said "julien's sick!"
julien's almost 40, and he skates so well. the few shots in beauty and the beast were just rad. i think it's ultimately intangible why his skating looks so good, but a few things do contribute to it: he doesn't flail his arms, he doesn't bend his knees very deep, and most importantly he seems to have committed himself to perfecting a few choice tricks.
yeah tp, skypager is probably my favorite too but stranger at burnside in that spitfire clip is straight magic. and yeah, skate 2 with the mad crazy updates!
i always that car shot, too. that lockdown shot at the top is tobin as well. if you find that car print available again, let me know. tobin is so good.
keep 'em coming, jaycee.
yeah, found that last one in an early issue of skateboarder... i think its late 01-early 02.
that's what rad about julien stranger, you could've told me that photo was in a new issue and i would've taken your word. timeless
one of the best people i ever had the chance to be friends with. real deal. no fluff. miss ya.
