#838: love will tear us apart

"If you're not fuckin' stoked on what you're doing, don't do it."

Some mid-90's mostly-Maple Marc Johnson joints.

Jake Phelps' signature shoe of choice... for damn near 15 years now.

But I really hope Marc comes through with some more of those trick references in Pretty Sweet like he did for Fully Flared... gotta love those subtle tips-of-the-hat. Did an "official" list of those from FF ever surface?

I feel like there's a list floating around on Slap somewhere.

What I am hearing, people close to marc. His part in pretty sweet is going to be the shit.

Seriously, those shoes were some of the best ever. I'd put them above the original Kostons.

I love reading the title in my Google Reader and knowing exactly who the post is about. The Maple Black Cat video was one of the first skate videos I saw, and Marc, Jerry and Louis' parts blew my mind. Such an underrated video. Thanks Chops

He responded to a question on crailtap. Not the list, but clues (sorry to blow the page up but I'm sick and have free time).

Q: Marc Johnson said in his Thrasher interview that he dedicated certain tricks in his part to people who have influenced him in skateboarding (or something like that). The dark slide down the handrail is an obvious nod to Gonz, but I can't really figure out what other tricks he's referring to. Is his late shove it over the handrail a tribute to Sheffey? The 540 bigspin shove-it for Rodney? Just wondering.
A: Yes, the darkslide is something I was always stoked on in Mark's part. Imagine seeing that for the first time in 1991. It was beyond comprehension. The other two tricks you refer to weren't for anyone else. There's a Danny Way trick in there, a Henry Sanchez trick in there, a Guy Mariano trick in there, and one for Julien Stranger. My ender ender ender is a trick Daewon did about seven years ago. Those guys are the real deal, and I've always been inspired by what they do.--MJ

I know that ledge trick he does (frontboardslide spin into backnoseblunt) was Danny Way in Questionable. Marc's opening line is at the spot Tommy Guerrero skated in Public Domain. Not sure about the Mariano and Stranger clips but I am pretty sure Henry did the frontside 5-0 to backside 180 landing in a switch nosegrind to fakie on a curb in pack of lies, marc did this on a schoolyard bench during his last song

I think the he does a hot butter knife or whatever it's called in reference to julien.

Excellent post. Watched every MJ part on youtube today after reading that interview. So sick. Thanks Chops

Thanks fellas.

Another couple of Henry tributes could be the 5-0 grind to frontside noseslide right at the beginning which was an ender in Pack of Lies. Then during the second song he does a fakie 5-0 to noseslide which Henry did in the Blind section of Virtual Reality.

Always liked those Maple clips he had in the early 411's.

Glad he found a spot on the Chocolate team.

hot knife through butter was also on a speed wheels ad with natas doing a mosquito grab.

I remember reading that TWS interview when it came out and tripping on the story about Marc hitting a girl. Reading it now, it seems like it must have been some kind of inside joke or exaggeration, but I'd be interested to find out if there's any real story behind it...

Sanch and Marc both dO the fakie 5-0 to switch tail.
