chrome ball incident #186: four-eyes

the long-overdue shawn mandoli post. never came in contact with dude, but he always seemed to be having a lot of fun with his friends and seemed to take everything* thrown at him in stride.

*everything: people fucking with him about his skating, teeth, height, glasses and/or religious beliefs... and oh yeah, the time he almost killed his entire team after falling asleep behind the wheel of the tour van.

Mandoli! One day Shawn and I rolled into Deluxe cause I think he wanted to pick up a package and probably just hang out and talk to Jim or something. We were all sitting at this table and I remember Shawn asking Jim about the Real Video (this was at least a few years before the first one even came out) and Jim saying that they really need to get someone to start filming (there weren't really a lot of "filmers" at that point and this was way before it became viable to actually do something like that for a living) and Shawn points over to me and says "why don't you get Jon to do it". Jim then turns to me and asks me if I wanted to film some of the guys for the Real video. He offered me $700 bucks a month and all the free product I wanted. I had just stopped working for another company at the time and I didn't have a job so I said yes. Mind you, I had never filmed anyone before in my life but I figured it couldn't be too hard. Jim's rationale was that I was already friends with most of the team and so filming would be easy. Well, I'll tell you what, that shit wasn't that fun. I think there were something like 9 pros at the time and not to mention all the ams. I spent most of my days and even nights filming with all those dudes. I'd drive down to SJ to film with Shawn and Ed DeVera sometimes and there were always requests from the other guys to drive places and film. Well, I started to set limits to when I would film and certain days I wouldn't film cause I had other obligations (like just living) and sometimes I wouldn't want to wake up at 6am just to film at some cutty spot. Mind you, there really wasn't a filming culture like that back then so some of their requests seemed ridiculous. Some of the riders weren't really feeling that (some of which were my buddies) so I remember going into Deluxe one day and Jim unceremoniously firing me. haha I think he told me something like Max needing to make some extra money cause vert wasn't doing too well so he was gonna film. I remember asking Max sometime later about filimg the video and he said he didn't have any idea about that. Looking back, that's some pretty funny shit!
