R.I.P. Maurice Sendak
Underground legend that left as quickly as he came, Brian Ferdinand.

killer photos, that back 50 indy ad is so raw, and that mini ramp 5-0...! never heard of dude but thanks for keeping me up on my skate history
ReplyDeleteI remember the photo of him doing that NBS and wondering if he rode his board backwards, since it's the Salman Agah fairy slick and and Salman's head is on the nose of the board. Or is he doing a switch blunt? Because at that time switch was kinda new (to the point switch was even called fakie nollie in a TWS trick tip) and people didn't ride off the nose like we do now; they simply popped off the tail. Did I overlook the trick caption when I zoomed in?

Never really heard of Ferdinand (sic?) but everything was really good. Props on the Sendak shout out; I've been inundated by memorials for the guy on NPR and everywhere else I look, and from out of all of that, I have the not-so-creeping suspicion that he would have loved skateboarding, through and through.
ReplyDeletethis guy, Ricky Windsor,Curtis Staufer,J.J Rogers,Wade speyer and Phil Shao etc are true skate gods. The norcal guys were not about being flashy and keeping up with the skate industry. It just seemed like these guys just skated and put their souls into everything they did. Thanks a lot for shinning light on the ones that seem to slip through the cracks!, and is there anyway we can get a Curtis Hsiang/Ruben Orkin post??!!
ReplyDeleteSick post, Chops! Brian Ferdinand was a super ripper. I skated with him some back in the day. He was from the East Bay. My favorite memory of him skating was at an FTC contest. I think this was around 91-92. I remember he went up to the quarterpipe and did a half cab blunt to shuffle. At the time, people had just started doing no handed blunts. And the only dudes that I really saw doing them at the time were guys like Mike Carroll, Rick I, Jovontae and such. So for him to do something like that...thinking back, I think he won that contest. Top three for sure.
ReplyDeleteThank you once again chops.
ReplyDeletea legend more of a splash in the pan.
ReplyDelete91-92 people were already doing nose blunts down handrails.

Awesome post! I was always stoked on his photos back in the day. I hope he is still skating.
ReplyDeleteWhat mag is that black and white frontside ollie to grind photo from? The one with Ferdinand written in blood goo letters.
Awesome post. At some point, you need to give JJ Rogers some shine. Like Ferdi, JJ is another underrated Norcal ripper who is still going strong today.

ReplyDeletethat blunt fakie/spitfire ad is a favorite. so simple but so gnarly.
ReplyDeleteIn 88 I lived on 167th Brian came by and borrowed my Minor Threat and Verbal Abuse records. Did I say borrowed? I meant stole.
ReplyDeleteIt's so great to see these photos. I love Brian. We went to high school together and were good friends. We skated together all throughout the mid 80s. He was a great skater and super stylish. Those were great days.
