o.g. rasta rubberband man with the classic bendy flow, jake rupp. another victim of the element blackhole...
"As far as Element goes... it is what it is and it ain't much."
gotta wonder what could've been. hope dude is well out there.
special thanks to the 'tap.
Always dug this dudes style, super smooth and underrated. His front board pop-out's always got me stoked.
ReplyDeleteThat frontboard is burly as fuck.I remember a photo of him skating in his barn taken from outside looking in. Something about the colors, you could almost smell the autumn in the air. So east coast. I can't remember who shot it. I also remember when him and PJ were the ams on Element, that feels like it was so long ago. I'm only 21 but that kind of makes me feel old ahah
ReplyDeleteAlso, anyone agree on a slight Guru Khalsa similarity? Something about his arms on that ollie over the rail
ReplyDeleteThanks for this one!
ReplyDeleteSkateboarding is so full of great personalities that it's easy to forget about people you really like and then to see them pop up is nice.
That interview was good. Pretty crazy to see a 19 year old kid talking like that.
I like the ollie into the bank and the gap out to boardslide. Arms tucked closely in both to avoid the walls!!
Any news on this guy as of late? I remember reading he was 'living in a bottle' for a while and not skating much but that was a while ago.
Thanks for the post! Never read that interview before, shit was on point!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I always remember Rupp for owning nollie frontside bigspins....
Those handrail flat bar tricks in that static part are insane! The nose grind he does on one of 'em would be killin' it in anyone's part now a days!
And yeah Dan77 I'm feeling the Guru comparison... Thanks again for the post, wish he was still ripping it!
Don't want to get off topic, but I don't know how else to contact ya. Just wanted to say that a Tim Upson post would be sick! Love the blog, check it every day!
ReplyDeleteThat quote on element is so true. Started out as a really cool company but became really lame over time. It's almost like the new world industries with the flame boy bs.
ReplyDeleteelement stealing this guys soul and then kicking him off maybe the main reason why i hate that company soo much
ReplyDeletedon't know why I never paid attention to the dude... but after looking at these pics, I realize I was a moron not to, that gap to boardslide and gap into the bank are crazy...
ReplyDeleteat this point the Element Vortex needs to get certified coordinates
ReplyDeletei think it's near the Wahoo's in Costa Mesa
Jake was sick, and I can imagine he's still sk8ing. For sk8ers on the East Coast, when you quit or get cut from a team it definitely must hurt and make it harder to move on to the next thing. In Cali it's gotta be easier to get hooked up when your hanging with all the pros and team managers and filmers.
ReplyDeleteI sk8ed with Jake a little when he would come to DC and he seemed like a really nice kid. Im sure he's doing alright for himself and putting his time into other things. He probably got a little bummed out by the Element experience and maybe did not want to move to Cali to keep the pro dream alive.
If your reading this Jake, good luck to you!
used to skate w/jake and them in front of my dorm at Univ of Maryland. those were good good times.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you Dan77, he got Khalsa style smooth and light pop, but Khalsa to me is much more tech,by the way nice one to be posted...how about him next for the next post forum???
ReplyDeleteElement needs to bring back Andy Howell. His former assistant Johnny is now responsible for it's current direction and decline. Andy is the one who made Element unique.
ReplyDeleteJake Rupp rips. TUCCI post!!!!!!please
ReplyDeleteLove that static part, also hyped on the silver star ad, sick post.
ReplyDeleteNo disrespect to Guru, he rips for sure, but I don't think there's really any comparing Guru to this dude in his prime.
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDeleteI've heard his name but I never saw any footage of him. Wasn't paying very close attention. Pretty sick.
Element vortex lol That Sebo guy on stacks got lucky to get out of the vortex. Flow for 4 years and then they say fuck off, you're never gonna be on the team. brutal.
He loves skating and skating loves him. nevermind a 'comeback'...dude needs to be healthy in his mind and his body. you only get one turn on the planet. make the most of it. rise like the phoenix, Jake.
ReplyDeleteRupp is a ripper!
ReplyDeleteBut ...
Element is such a sad company. Take one part super skate talent and one part of corporate usa's worst sides.
Element is totally out of the loop.
Why don't the skate crew leave and start something fresh!!
Maybe it has got Bam's evil curse.
And now Element try their best to get popular with super friendly mr Appleyard.
I used to skip class on warm spring days and go to Landsdowne. I met Jake there on day and skated with him the next few weeks. Super rad dude, awesome skater. Thanks for this one, hope dudes is thriving
ReplyDeletewasn't he supposed to get on the original habitat line up in '99? this dude embodies what i liked about late ninties skating.
