chrome ball incident #752: heaven is falling

The subject of yet another documentary I can't wait to see... the gnarliest dude ever, Danny Way.

I helped out a little bit on this one and if Jake accomplished half the things he set out to do, it should be amazing.

FYI: Along with some other goodies, I scanned this Big Brother interview because I lurked some dude grandstanding on a messageboard earlier today about what it supposedly contained and I just wanted to prove him wrong. Fuck a bunch of know-it-alls.

And do I really have to talk about how nuts that whole jumping-out-of-a-helicopter thing is?

Be back on Thursday. Taking my lady out tonight and gotta be all romantic and shit.

Bye.

When does the movie come out?

Nice. You should do a post on just his street skating. I watched Questionable again the other day and I was reminded.

Is there anyone who fits in both the old school and the new school so comfortably? Dude can literally do anything he wants on a skateboard

love the poweredge pullout!
Such a sick shot! His Public Domain footage was so rad, I always wished there was more....
makes me wonder......because of what Guy said about Stacy holding back footage so his main pros didn't look bad.
Was there held back Danny Way footage?

Those T-Bones look so big in that first shot.

I'm looking forward to the documentary but not as much as the Bones Brigade one.

What was D-Way's beef with Jim Grey? Granted, when I met him (Jim) at the Acme HQ, he was really pushing the wanna-be emulation of Rocco a-la throwing loose cash around for props, but he seemed innocent enough as just another washed up bandwagon 80's pro. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men...or 19 year old hell-ions??

I always found it weird that he was on the workshop for like 8 years but never showed seemed too into the whole thing (no video parts and few ads). I know he had a really bad surfing injury at one point, but it would've been awesome if he was still a part of Workshop lore in a much bigger way.

Also, I think Danny Way was the one of the first people whose character led me to realize that not all skateboarders are smart people. OOF @ that interview. Wasn't he also involved in some way with the death of guy?

josh swindell and the whole ordeal. I would be super suprised if the doc went into that.

Chops, still have the no murders clause on the chromeball?

One of the greatest, but I always get bummed when I read an interview with him.

Not entirely sure when it's coming out, to be honest. I know a rough cut exists but I believe its still getting tweeked.

that's a real good question, loo. real good question.

don't know the backstory on the Grey beef, Quinn. Didn't they almost get into a fight at one of those SF Fountain contests? Or am I mistaken?

White Ninja, I do know that Jake was in contact with Josh. And he did ask for all the Swindell material I could find. We'll see. That's the burning question.

And yeah, the no convicted murderers clause is still in effect (even though the no benihanas clause was broken the week after I said that). I am open to considering a Josh and/or Gator post strictly for the history of it. They were amazing skaters and Gator was one of the biggest pros of that decade... But it would take much convincing for me to do those posts though.

Thanks guys.

I think you should do gator. There is a kind of clear break between when he was a skate superstar and doing stuff that was relevant to the progression of skating, and when he got caught up in the drugs and creepy Christianity that led up to the murder. As best I can tell Josh was actually representing an extreme version of some of the unfortunate memes in skating at the time when he killed that person. Amongst some skaters it was cool to be a thuggy dude that hit people in the head. Actually, there are a bunch of pro skaters from that era that have been historicised glowingly, that are lucky they didn't kill someone. Andy Roy? James Kelch? Fabian Alomar? And then all the footage of skaters hitting security guards in the head with their boards? All of that stuff is part and parcel of a shitty part of skating history, and Josh is just the poster boy for it. And, it's not like he contributed anything all that substantial. There are plenty of other second rate pros from that era that don't get posts here. He should be forgotten. Gator, on the other hand, during his time in skating was basically an innocuous pop star, who did a lot of really cool stuff for years before he went off the deep end. The gatair, the lien 360s...And his graphics definitely contributed to the 80s skating boom. I don't know, I respect your point of an iron clad rule, but also think there's a way to do a post that acknowledges his contributions but condemns his actions.

Also, there is another interview in Big Brother later on that has Chris Nieratko asking Way what he would do if his son was homosexual...and a solid offensive exchange after that. It's pretty damn creepy...Way clearly has a history and issues.

I'm not surprised by it, but it is pretty lame that no one EVER discusses the murder Way was involved in. It's pretty well known that Swindell took the blame and Way walked after crushing a guy's head with a cinderblock.

I'm sure it won't even be mentioned for a second in the doc...it's pretty taboo. I mean, he did invent the mega ramp...so what if he has a violent / homophobic past. Megaramp!

All this talk about D-Way killing a guy is bumming me out. I just don't see Danny being that kind of guy.
As for the Gator issue Chops, I think you should reconsider. There are ways of showing his accomplishments on a Skateboard without condoning the rape and murder of women. Also, mental illness and depression play a big roll in the Gator story. That doesn't excuse his actions, but it does give you the whole story. Gator wasn't some sadist who's goal in life was to hurt others. He was (in my eyes) an overly sensitive and extremely needy self loather. The type of person who needs to be told by others how great he is. Not because he's a narsist, but because he thinks so little of himself that he needs to be reashured he's doing the right/cool thing. You know the type... "Is this cool?" "Should I do this?" "Does this look alright?" People like that do well when they have legons of adoring fans, but are lost when the fans are gone. You take anyone that's is desperate for love and acceptance, give them fame, give them money and take it away almost overnight... They're gonna crash and burn somehow. (I'm not condoning or excusing rape and murder)
I always wonder what sets guys like Mike V and Tony Hawk apart from guys like Gator and Jeff Phillips? All four were Skateboard Superstars with money to spare at one point and all four become outcasts in Skateboarding and lost there money only a short time later. Why were Tony and Mike V able to hang on and find new opportunities in Skateboarding and why weren't Gator and Phillips?

Sorry for the dime store psycology and for going off topic. I know this is the comment section for the D-Way post, but all the Gator talk got me thinking.

Sorry for doing a novel sized comment again Chops.

That indy tuck knee transfer photo at McGill's is amazing! I stared at that transfer every time I went there but could never muster up the courage to try it.

my first real board was a gator. i think it was black and pink. the swirl one. it rescued me from a nash tuff top. just had to throw that in there after seeing these comments. i'm not requesting a gator post though.

to Bif: Jeff Phillips was the coolest. Despite their contributions, he shouldn't even be lumped in with Tony and Vallely, let alone fucking Gator. He was among the very few transcendent vert skaters (Blender, Jessee, Claar, etc.) who completely "got it". His suicide was a complicated thing.

Right now Danny Way is patrolling our unions's southern border somewhere for us, armed to the gills and sipping on spiked coffee. And wearing a Platinum t-shirt.

I'm just gonna say it... Danny Way, in spite of his contributions to skateboarding, is a bigot and a homophobe. I submit that XYZ shirt with the rainbow flag with bloody bullet holes as exhibit A.
And we can try to rewrite history all we want, but Danny Way either murdered, or encouraged the murder of another person, apparently because the guy hit on him. Swindell may have actually crushed the guys skull with a brick, but Way did beat the shit out of him and started the whole event. Its was a hate crime, plain and simple.
Plus, there are other, unconfirmed stories of other violence against immigrants.
So, yeah, helicopter and great wall of China and all that but he should not be celebrated as a good person.

The older I get and the more I know about him the more creepy he seems.

No humor, self-absorbed, control freak, fake dominant and "fresh".

DC and Plan B are so far away of what skateboarding should be. Fun and creative.

I remember when I was in Münster and walked by the hotel where Danny and Colin stayed. And just as I am at the entrance Danny and Colin comes out in company with two young German girls. The part ways, but I remember the girls last words "Dont forget us". This is exactly the same time as Danny was married. True story

yo tic-tac, all of that is actually true. and to this day, it is a fucking fact that old ass dway exclusively dates blonde skanks under the age of 20. a few young ones here n there is cool, but not only. creepy rich white dude.

4I hung with some platinum riders in 97, or 98, in Encinitas. I clearly remember a t shirt that was a rip off of a Thrasher T Shirt, but instead of saying "thrasher", it said "Gaybasher". Being young, I thought it was funny, but looking back it is terrible. The worst thing is that I am pretty sure it was put out after the Josh Swindell incident.
