#674: screaming for vengeance

Always dug this dude's ultra-clean style and still rate his heelflip among to best to ever throw it, Kelly Bird.

Extra credit points go out to Dawes as he really killed it with the snaps in that Slap Portfolio.

And you gotta love the Bird's Nest piece. Classic shit.

Special thanks to Deluxe and Enjoi for the support. Thanks everyone.

Birdman (not that Birdman) is prolly the first pro I read about who made the transition from skater to team manager. At first I had no real idea what a TM did, but I soon realized it was quite possibly the most hellish job in the skateboarding industry. Imagine being in charge of a bunch of teenagers and early 20-somethings. All down for smoking, dranking, kicking it,gambling, bird hunting and other types of ill shit. It's a wonder more team managers don't have vicious amounts of gray hair. Can you imagine having to do per diems, hotel reservations, etc. UGH

I had a few of this dude's boards, though not the Judas Priest graphic. When I met him during Slam City—drunk in a bathroom at the Commodore, I think—I told him that I'd ridden his "Have a Heart" slick. He laughed and thanked me for the couple of dollars my purchases put in his pocket.

Sick post.

And Team Manager is still better than a real job. Though babysitting those pricks would def suck.

He did have a killer heelflip. That portrait series is good. I like that bs 180 nose grind shot. Super style.

Was hoping to see the fs nollie heel over the blackrock ledge. That's still amazing even to this day.

I remember back in the day there was a news story about a guy who stole a tank from the army or some shit and drove it around a residential area in SD and flattened a bunch of cars and shit.

Anyway they were interviewing eyewitnesses and whatnot and one of the people in the story was Kelly Bird and it was rad to read that shit in the newspaper that he had seen a guy driving a fucking tank down the street and causing straight mayhem.

Classic.

I have always liked Kelly, he seems to have humour.

My guess why he quit from pro is that he is built like a normal man (bigger than most older pros).

Yeah, that tank story was in Big Brother - more details here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawn_Nelson

Kelly Bird had an interview in R.A.D (UK skate mag) back in the day too, great style...
