chrome ball incident #484: burning

these return posts are always pretty difficult after taking some time-off... even more so this time after such an amazing trip to nyc.

figured I'd just let Larry take care of it for me.

first frontside board down a rail... yup.

too many highlights from the last week to mention... but I do think Chris Pfanner is my new favorite skater.

also, let me take this time to remind you that the use of sunblock during these warm summer months is not a matter to be taken lightly. failure to do so can result in quite the painful burn. application of said block would be most beneficial if one is to find themselves outdoors and exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time... like at a skateboard contest, for example.

...your friend and humble narrator is currently in a very crispy state.

thanks for all the support out there.

big up to DLX, Nike SB, the Epicly Later'd guys, Heel Bruise, Mighty Healthy and One-Up.

special thanks to Don Pendleton.

also, Keith wanted me to relay the he made some more "chrome ballers" shirts for those that didn't get one last time.

Nice choice, Chops. I remember that earthquake pic of the pop over the barrier. One of the raddest moments for skating back then.

Oh, and the sunburn. On June 4th, 2000 (the first really sunny day that season), I got 30 minutes of sun laying down on the grass in a park. The UV index was through the roof that day, and I suffered second degree burns on my sternum. I went into shock. I went to hospital and they brought in several doctors to look at me - "this guy was in the sun for 30 minutes". (I feel like they knew something I didn't that day, like a solar flare storm hit the planet and I didn't know it.) They put on this peanut butter-like paste on my torso, wrapped me up like a mummy, and sent me on my way later that evening. I had to use the paste and re-wrap my self for a couple weeks after that. But it wasn't over. The blisters that formed were unbelievable. Imagine a sandwich-size ziplock bag and fill it with water. I had blisters like that across my torso. My skin was hot to the touch but I would tremble with chills, and itch like you wouldn't believe. It was hell.

My then-girlfriend, current-wife was convinced that I would have permanent scarring. Unbelievably, I only have a couple freckles from the ordeal.

Since then, I'm in awe of the power of the sun. My incident was 10 years ago, and its only gotten worse since then. My sympathies to you.

How do those Chrome Ball shirts fit? Is a medium super snug?

holy shit, mike! I'm not that bad... just got my lobster on. Malloof was like sitting in a frying pan but the skating was worth it.

ATM, I'm not really sure how they fit. Keith just put mine in the mail today. I'm sure he'll be on here in a little bit.

fs board seq is amazing. The cons high tops, bones shirt, the style. Great!

The earthquake bump ollie over the guard barrier is a true classic.

Rick I looks fucking awesome on that nose slide!

bs lip Thrasher cover with tan half cabs. That's just way too perfect. I'd love to have a print of that photo.

I've been on the spf 30 program for a long time now... since 1992... ever since my dermatologist told me I was high risk for skin cancer. Re-apply every few hours too. Your skin will feel tacky as shit but it's worth it in the long run. Peels is supposed to take care of you about shit like spf... come on peels! LOL

As for the shirts... I'm fairly thin (6' tall, 158 lbs) and I wear a medium. There's a sizing chart in my post so measure one of your favourite shirts and find the one that is closest in size.

Keith,

SPF 30 is obsolete. You need to go above 40 to be effective against UV's now-a-days. Just a heads up, that shit is dated sun! I'm at risk too, many many moles, dermatologist every 6 months.

One!

SPF 30 blocks 97% UVB. SPF 60 blocks 99%. It's still good protection. It's not a linear scale. FWIW, Mexoryl(for UVA) has been approved in Canada and Europe for many years now. USA was lagging and it was only approved by the FDA several years ago.

Literally timeless. Would be hard pressed to put a date on any of his coverage after the boards got symetrical if I didn't already know.
When is the death box one from?

Jailed... i thought that was a weird one on that cover too.

Dj, Keith is the man behind the shirts. He's the one doing all that... as I'm much too lazy/self-conscious to self-promote. I will say that I asked him for an XL (as I seem to shrink everything in the wash) and he scolded me... you got your work cut out for you on the double-x. haha

smorales, that photo I cropped from an indy ad in Thrasher '98. I think the one with Cards over the buckets on the cover.

The Underworld Element ad (sucks that I can't just call it Element anymore) is perfection! I forgot all about that thing. Two of my top 3 all time faves in one ad. Doesn't get any better than that for me.

Keith- You're right about that Thrasher cover doing the backside lipslide. Everything about it. The style, the trick, his gear and he's riding a Rick I UE board.

Oh, and Shane O'Neill got fucking robbed! He should've made the finals!

chops said...

Yeah Jaycee, I actually didn't realize that Shane DIDN'T make the finals until after I did this post (we only went to day 1) but that is a huge oversight.

That kid killed it... and for that being his first pro contest and skating in the most-loaded heat of the day, Mr. O'Neill definitely has a bright future ahead of him. Switch k/f b/s lip down the 9 stair rail... seriously.

LOL someone had to take the reigns and get these shirts with E's great design out to the loyal followers of cbi. As far as I'm concerned, CBI is the best skateboard blog out there.

Nostalgia for all us old guys...

History lesson for the younger guys...

And fwiw, I'm not making any money off of these. Basically selling a few, flowing some to the homeys and more or less break even. I was very happy to see a skateboard company team manager purchase a shirt! That right there made my day. So sick! I'd love to see some of the former pro's who post here rocking a cbi shirt... Ricks, Jrog, Stone etc.
