chrome ball incident #400: love child

"get me in the background before you edit."

i've been saving daewon a while now for something epic but after he was passed up for posts #200 and #300, many of you were starting to wonder if this was an oversight or that maybe i just didn't care for south bay's finest. not at all.

mini ramp god, manual master, picnic table architect, water fountain fisherman... the list can go on and on for rocco's golden child. one of those type dudes that seems to ignore virtually all boundaries of logic and physics with such impossibly-smooth style that makes it look way too easy. the sho kosugi of skateboarding, daewon song.

and how come nobody ever talks about this part? (cue de la's "eye know")

alright fellas... i'd like to thank you for all the support chrome ball has gotten over the course of these 400 incidents. to everyone that has sent emails, posted links, left comments, or hooked me up with whatever... muchos gracias. And big up to my regulars, you're the lifeblood of cbi.

special thanks to deluxe, stereo, kayo, epicly later'd, nike sb (7/10), rob sissi, david ashley, police informer, the skateboard mag, transworld and all the other mags out there that either don't know or don't care about me pillaging through and reposting their pages.

the chrome ball incident will return on monday, january 4th. there's some crazy shit in store for 2010.

thank you andy jenkins for the lightpost logo i took from an old wrench pilot comic and thank you neil blender for everything else.

bye.

400. woah. Nice work the whole way through. Happy Holidays.

It's rad to see daewon doing that front side flip over the rail. Pretty rare to see him jumping down stuff, but he made it look good. He makes it allllll look good.
J.B. in store for the 2010?

Great post. Do you remember a sequence of a long 360 flip over a hydrant from about '99? Might have been in a transworld pro spotlight. I tried to find it earlier this year but no luck. I think the footage was in the first Rodney vs. Daewon video, which is in my opinion his best part besides NWO. Anyway I was devoting a good amount of time to watching the world boxed set this summer and I concluded that Daewon is probably the most underrated dude ever, along with Shiloh. Props on #400.

The 360 over a hydrant is in his pro spotlight from 1997, in the TWS with Guy doing a switch pop shove nosegrind on the cover, and I think it's a still.

Hahaha...Slow down on that south bays finest son....lmao..

Ive known Dae since around 87 when he was a Z-roller and wanted to be Butch Sterbings..lol..

For about 5 years we skated everyday together...Back before we were hooked up...I took him to all the spots in the south bay...He never left Gardena back in the day..lmao..

So many stories and fun times we had from around 88 till 92ish...

Daewon underrated?

lets think about that for a moment shall we.
he won skater of the year, best video part of the year, hes in the tony hawk video games, he gets a tws ad every 3 to 4 months. people cant even do a manual without it being compared to him. underrated i think not.

I thought New World Order was kind of generic, relatively speaking. Nothing against Daewon, who I thought was one of the highlights of that video. And when I first saw his part in Love Child, I was like, Whoa... this guy is good. But compared to Rubbish Heap, Love Child, Video Days... it seemed like New World Order was just kind of there. To me, anyway.

Speaking of which, I just watched "The Man Who Souled the World". What stood out to me was Rocco telling Woodstock and Metiver, "Give me $100,000. Leave the industry and never come back. You've got ten seconds"... Harsh.

Nice! I don't think I've ever seen that double flip sequence. BB?

Always been psyched on the staircase wall drop to catch LOL

In the Bread and Butter ad, who are the left and right on the top row? Looks like a blonde girl and Mike York? Karl Watson on the bottom row.

Can't remember which came first. Artafact or Deca?

I've never been a huge fan is his skateboarding "style". He comes across as a bit robotic but with a kung fu touch. Regardless, I think he's awesome.

I like in his Epicly Laterd how several people talk about his video parts all being filmed in Cali, mostly near his house LOL

Congrats on an amazing 2009. Have a great holiday season E and P and looking forward to 2010, especially the fall.

Great post! Thanks for everything.

That artafact ad is crazy.

I filmed his fakie flip fakie 5-0 fakie flip out for him for D vs. R 1. (still one of my favorite tricks he's done for some reason, I feel lucky to have got to shoot the first one) He gave me a board and some wheels for 15 minutes of "work." Nicest dude ever.

Sorry, no LOL's. Wait, he bought me strawberry Boone's once...

when i first saw that artafact ad i tripped the fuck out for a good 10 minutes. great choice for the 400th.

Guess Eric Ricks wants the title of South Bay's finest for himself?!

Keith: Left is a Swedish (pretty sure on that) girl named Misha, early World draftee. Never saw any footage of her, and don't know what became of her. Right is Yorkatron.

E.Ricks said...

Haahah..Sorry Pluto but south bays finest belongs to many, many other skaters that laid the path out that way before people such as Daewon and myself even entered the picture...

The girl in the photo i do believe is Sasha Clarcke..

Pluto Dickens said...

No worries Eric. The list could go on and on....I'd add Chatman and Klein for sure.

While I've got you, what was the name of that Think video, probably one of their first ones? It was black and white, all hip-hop instrumental soundtrack. Had you, Shao, Luanich, others. Can't find it anywhere for the life of me. Used to dig it.

Was I wrong in thinking I saw you cruisin' the Kent (WA) skatepark a little while back?

E.Ricks said...

George Wantanabe id have to add to that list also...

It was the second video from Think and it was called Home On The Range..you can find my part on youtube..lol..

Hahah..Yeah that probally was me..i now live in Washington...

Sorry Dae and Chops for taking up your space...

thanks for all the comments everybody.

anon1, i was kinda thinking the same thing about seeing daewon jumping over shit. And yes, JB in 2010.

hairfarmer, Lucas is correct. I'll post it up at some point if you don't get to it first. Thanks holmes.

i was thinking the "south bay's finest" might get a reaction out of you Ricks. Does Daewon's Butch Sterbin's fascination explain that blonde high top he rocked for so long? haha. And for real, comment as much as you want to on here, homie. I'm just stoked you check it out. Plus, I'm sure everyone's curious about your take on the things posted here.

coals... i've always been kinda indifferent about love child because it came out in Rocco's super summer of '92 where Plan B, Blind (Tim & Henry), 101 and World all released videos within like 3 months (wow!). Love Child was good... but compared to those other bangers, it was just kinda so-so for me. New World Order came out the next summer where it was only up against Virtual Reality and it fared much better for me. Plus, I always dug NWO's soundtrack.

Keith, Ricks is right... that's Saecha (sp?) Clark. I know she had a venture ad back in the day but that's all i remember. And I believe Deca was first. Thanks as always holmes.

Thanks Quinn. Strawberry Boone's! Priceless!

Thanks everyone.

Just so you know...I've had CBI bookmarked for at least 6 months now and I check it almost every single day just in case. I've never commented, but I love what you're doing. Keep it up!!

E.Ricks said...

Hahah..South bays finest..i did get a little chuckle out of it...

I knew that was Saecha Clark because i had a little crush on her back in the day..lmao...

Thanks Chops keep up the good work and have a safe and happy holidaze...

oh man, that tre flip over that brick wall is so buttery. whoever shot that photo caught it at the perfect moment. Daewon's contributions to skateboarding have been nothing short of amazing.

Keith said...

trip out... if you scroll your browser up and down on the double kickflip sequence, it moves!

Chops---congrats on a major kick-ass 2009---can't wait to see what 2010 has in store.

Daewon as #400---most excellent choice!

Did anyone catch his epicly laterd?

Does he really take claim for being the 1st person ever on video to do a 6trick line? Does he realize that there was skateboarding going on befor 1992 and love child?

We are all waiting impatiently for your return. But at least I DO KNOW who's next...very stoked!

There's probably a whole bunch of people like me that read the posts and appreciate them without ever commenting, so thank you Chops for your hardwork and have a great new year.

Keith said...

The fact that peel is stoked on #401, I'm guessing Lennie!

chops said...

thanks again everyone.

if i had to guess, i think you're right boil. fresh just seems too high-maintenance.

keith, 401 is still a work in progress. hope it works out but there's a good chance it won't. we'll see. lennie was a good guess though, haha.

I've thought, Skateboarding reminds me of music, in a way. A style of music will become popular for a while... and then it fades out and becomes replaced with something else. It seems like the same thing happens in skateboarding. I always liked people who just did what they did, in music and skateboarding, regardless of what anyone else was doing.
