chrome ball incident #379: know the ledge

"all he ever does is talk, talk, talk, talk, talk...."

felt a little ambitious today.

transworld's epic koston video retrospective, published on the occasion of frost's landmark yeah right part...

which i'm thinking has my vote for video part of the decade, you son of a bitch.

(until you guys remind me of a bunch of better ones that will make me feel like a real asshole for forgetting about in such a public forum)

alright guys, have a good weekend.

stoked on this.

special thanks to my peoples at stereo.

my good friends went to yeah right video premier and called me when they were driving home and were pretty much speechless, almost quiet, I was like, "wait, wait, what happened?" and they were like, "dude, KOSTON." and they both sounded just dumbfounded at his profound level of ability. consistently blowing minds.

Chopps, I'm gonna have to agree to disagree w you. I think the best part in yeah right was Gino, hands down. I also think Kostons part in Falling down was my personal fave.

This is so good that it can't be real! You made my weekend.

I don't think I ever saw that before. Thanks! I always thought Koston with long hair looked kinda funny.

I went to the Yeah Right premier in Van. It was during a Canucks playoff run and Koston seemed pretty psyched on that. His part was definitely crazy to see on a big ass theater screen.

Damn, I remember this article! Awesome post. Can't believe how long it's been since Yeah Right! came out.... I remember waiting for that shit like it was Christmas morning.

And what about this little piece of Koston footy from Yeah Right that you forgot?

"You've got like five enders in your part, but you don't have an ender ender." Haha.

I agree though - Koston with long hair... regrettable.

I THOUGHT IT WAS RAD WHEN HE HAD LONG HAIR, IT WAS SO UNEXPECTED, PLUS IT MUST HAVE KEPT HIM WARM ON ALL THOSE NIGHT TIME HAMMERS HE WAS OUT GETTING WITH JIMMY GRECO.

thanks for the comments guys.

i've only been recently introduced to the act of seeing skate videos on the big screen and i love it. what i saw was all montages of clips that i'd seen a billion times and it still blew me away so seeing a face melter like "yeah right" for the first time like that must've been overwhelming to say the least.

sprntrl, you know it pains me to say this cause we've both talked before about our extreme fondness/favoritism towards long island's finest... and i agree with you about falling down being my personal fave as well (even though once i realized Guru was rhyming about playing basketball against woody harrelson, it put a little of a damper on it)... but koston's part in yeah right is fucking bananaboats.

and dedleg, that owen wilson clip is still so amazing. infinitely quotable.

I remember watching his video part and just being in awe. He really put down an impossible standard, which is why his Lakai part was so much harder to watch (I truly believe that the Lakai part is a great part, but will always be overshadowed by the tricks and editing of Yeah Right! and it is therefore difficult to watch the Lakai part).

I also remember the bangers at the end. The nollie b/s noseblunt was a jaw dropper, and then when it all fades to black, you hear him drop in on the stairs at san marcos and it slowly fades into him hit that 3-flip noseblunt. so dope.

Chops,
After watching the videos you posted in the Koston: Box Set article I started to see a recurring theme. Before a skater would try a trick down the "Small" Carlsbad Gap the filmer would spit. I've seen this in other World Camp (101, Blind, Plan B and World Industries) videos from that era. So... Here's my question. Was the spitting some sort of good luck ritual (or what Reynolds calls "The Madness"), or is it a coincidence?

Let me know,
Bif

P.S. I love your site. I visit it almost every day. Thank you so much for doing this site. I had reconstructive spinal surgery and I can no longer Skate, but I still love Skateboarding and it's nice to visit your site and relive the good old days.

thanks for the support, bif. i only recall 2 carlsbad little gap spitting instances... markovich spitting on the first 101 vid before mcnatt's variel heel and the phantom second spitter (wasn't that in a seinfeld episode?) in the union video. i always took it as that dude just mocking kris to be honest.

kinda like how saying "yeah, jimmy that was for you" (e.ricks) and "put me in the background before you edit" (daewon) became popular video things to say back then.

i could be wrong though.

Hate to say it but... His best video part is in Chomp... Rail with full on camera beam as he rides it out... come on...

Now funny story about Mr. Koston...
If ya'll didn't know, his best friend Atiba is from a small town in Colorado... I am from the town next door and grew up with Atiba and Ako (his twin).
(Sidebar, Chops if you want to put up an Atiba post I could tell some funny ass stories and send some great back in the day photos, including a great photo of me sitting on Koston's lap at Atiba's wedding).
Anyways, I was working in a casino in a small mountain town in Colorado... one of the cocktail ladies was Atiba's mom. Have known Atiba and Ako for years (20 now i think) so we talked about them a lot at work... She and her BF went out to LA to visit at one point... When she got back she told me many stories... one was about having dinner with Atiba's best friend... Eric... She asked if I knew Eric and I really didn't know how to answer her... I had never met the guy at that point but.... GOD DAMN YEAH... It's fucking Eric fucking Koston... of course I know him... It was a crazy reminder that everyone is human and being famous is only relative to what you are famous for.... Others don't know and don't give a shit...

Anyways...
