chrome ball incident #361: i heart ny

you always know it's been a good trip whenever you find yourself bummed upon returning to your normal everyday life. nyc is always a good time but that MOMA joint was just surreal. super good.

too many highlights...

real quick: did anybody ever see this back in the day? not me... evidently gonz hadn't either.

(I actually thought mondo visions was that joint with agent orange playing by the pool. whoops)

i honestly don't really know how to start this thing so I'm just gonna let the default settings kick in... whenever in doubt, gotta go with what you know. gino.

that switch inward-heel manual... looking way too easy. fuckin' love that guy.

still kinda tired. i'll be more with it tomorrow. thanks everybody.

Gonz looks so comfortable on the bigger fish style board, I wonder if that's why he makes the Zip Zingers and rides longboards upon occasion?

Best style ever? When in doubt go with Gino...couldn't agree more.

Sidenote: Arcade II very soon! Couple surprises in store! Keep up the good work on the site, killing it lately!

Always look forward to what Gino stuff you have up your sleeve. Coming back strong on this one.
"win some, lose some" add is so sick.
best style ever. yes. no doubt about it.

I don't know if people understand how big that sw/pop shuv is at flushings over the pipe, those gaps aren't small, and the amount of pizzazz he does it with is incredible. que bella!

Black Label Randy Colvin board. thanks E.

Welcome back, Sir Chops.

Gino I. had style, no doubt. It makes me think there's a difference between style and "steeze". One is natural, and the other is contrived b.s.

People sometimes think Gonz does a switch ollie in Mondo Vision, but the video is just reversed. I got forensic on it.

I have to throw out a big thank you to Rob, Andy, DoLo, and Ricky for showing us an awesome time in NY...

big up to my man chris too.

thanks for all the comments guys.

glad you still got those late-shuvs ricks. the world just wouldn't seem right if you lost them.

curious about these surprises, jrog. keep us posted.

coals, i think you're right about style vs steez. never really thought about it that way but i agree, style is definitely just a natural extension where steez can seem more labored.

great job with everything the other night, patrick. thanks for the comment.

thanks for the welcome back everyone.

i heart peel.

Can't go wrong with some Gino. That Black Label ad is fucking cool.

Also - nice to see that pop shove it over the Flushing Meadows gap considering it's recently been shut down.

Gino post = perfect comeback.

If I remember correctly, the Vision video with Agent Orange at the pool was Skatevisions

Peel and Chops, it was truly a pleasure to shut down the bar across the street from the moma with you two.

btw, Dolo's name has now been changed to Steven Dolbert

Maybe I have the token old guy "Things were better in my day" mentality, but it does seem like there's no modern version of Gino, or Jason Lee, or Andy Howell... it's more like a sea of generic dudes.

I was thinking of steeze in the modern sense of "How far can you take your back foot off 360 flips? Whoa! It looks like you're doing a no-handed benihana! That's steeze!".

Good to have you back, E. Glad you had a good time in NY. Wish I could've gone to that.

Gino always had a tight shoe game. Nobody ever mentions that? Trick selection, style, gear, and all the right sponsors. You can't fade that. I hope he goes out with a last hurrah in the next Chocolate video.

Coals - I understand where you coming from, but I think you might be asking for a lot from these kids when you mention Gino and Jason Lee. But I think there are some kids out there that are taking to tradition but also pushing the future. I love watchinh that kid Dylan Rieder skate. Kid looks fucking good on a skateboard. Alex Olson's just got it in his blood. Another kid that just looks so good on his board. I really like that kid Vincent Alvarez. I think his skating is so raw and powerful. Reminds me of Paulo Diaz in some ways. Raven Tershay is killin' any park you put him in - with style! But the guy who I think is really the future is Sean Malto. Plenty of people have pretty much annointed P Rod NEXT. I gotta give that one to Malto. Good trick selection, looks good as fuck on a board, can skate parks, can skate street, goes big (that Thrasher cover might be the best one of the year) and always has a smile on his face. Add that to the fact that he's still so you and humble, sky's the limit for that kid. Skater of the Year. You heard it here first.

perfect comeback post.

that flushing ad is a thing of beauty!

Jaycee I like your selections. But if I had to put a damper on the best new styles...Mike Anderson or Brad Cromer. Hands down

It's funny how a Gino posts turns into a style post. Dude is a natural. Definitely one of my favourites to watch on a board. I recently saw the Hosoi documentary and they touch on style (Hosoi) vs. tech (Hawk), which I think is something that will always exist. Today's generation of teenage skateboarders is more robot-like and tech, and IMO there is no Jason Lee or Gino-like skater out of the "newer" generation.

I do like the way that Walker Ryan skates though. As for Malto... I see an amazing skater but I don't see amazing style. He's like half robot. LOL JMHO

There shouldn't ever be another jason lee or a Gino, that's what makes them so great.
"often imitated, never duplicated."
Industry is rinsed when it comes to ability, everybody is so good, but there are only a few that matter, and 75% of those who matter have mattered since 1996 (give or take a few years), by evidence of this site. The ads, the video parts, have all aged very well.
Chrome ball = very good taste.

i've come across a few heads out there that think just because i do this site that i'm on some kinda crazy anti-2009 unabomber steez... that I'm holed up in some shack somewhere clutching onto some worn and tattered issues of poweredge magazine, muttering incoherently about webb park and studio 43 while plotting on how I can blow up the berrics.

there's plenty of kids out there doing their thing. skaters will continue to build on what came before them while some will lead with the majority left to follow/imitate. that's the way its always been and the way it will always be.

i actually think that style is being emphasized more now than ever before (almost to an almost ridiculous standard)... largely due it being one of the remaining differences in telling everyone apart since street skating has been so flushed out and streamlined as far as trick exploration goes.

busenitz, malto, j johnson, anderson, mo, alvarez, olson... the list goes on and on and none of these dudes (at list those listed) seem to be concerned with being the "next" anything really... except legendary(especially now since olson's julien stranger fetish seems to have been restrained a bit).

keith, you said "Today's generation of teenage skateboarders is more robot-like and tech"... can you imagine how many older heads said that same thing when our generation came up?

just my humble opinion.

jaycee, i wouldn't be mad at either a malto or busenitz soty... but the geezer in me is secretly pulling for lance.
