chrome ball incident #253: spanish castle magic

steve ortega = super good.

the options to choose from were pretty slim on this one but i really just wanted to have an ortega post on here. for those not familiar, dude was a top am for h-street back in the day until a knee injury (i think) took him out of the game. damn shame, too...

the 360 kickflip up top was literally the next page after j. lee's sequence of the same trick... the first time (i know of) any non-rodney, street-oriented tre flips featured in a magazine. one dude's a household name, the other dude's literally in the poorhouse. go figure.

and since we're kind of on the subject, does anyone else find hokus pokus to be horribly-neglected and underrated these days, especially when considering how important and amazing it really was/is?

What was with all of the similar sounding voice-over narration in similar era videos? ie sickboyz

He also had the first 360 flip on video (I'm sure Rodney has one filmed before this, but Stacy was probably pointing the camera toward his gyrating upper body as he often does).

just jump to 2:14 if you get tired of Schoeffel and that Shultes clown board.

You beat me to it Chops, I was going to suggest this guy. What about Brennand Schoeffel?

damn. I had an inkling it was Steve Ortega! The night clip bobjohn posted from Shackle me Not containing Ortega's 360 flip. Crazy that the first street 360 flip on video was stuck in the middle of some random montage. And he had a lot of good ones in Hokus Pokus. Stoked on him in that video.

I actually had an Ortega Poorhouse board. It was sick!

That 360 degrees varial kickflip was in the first US mag I ever bought. I had absolutely no idea what was going on, it was a whole article about that trick, right? And back then the motors for sequences weren't fast enough so the j lee sequence wasn't of much help either ha ha. God times.

Hell yeah! Ortega's the homie...or was anyway, been a long time. But doesn't Rodney have a double 360flip on flat in like bones 2 or animal chin? coulda swore he did... Regardless, Ortega ripped. Good postings man! Was there ever a Ronnie Bertino post?

I sent Steve the link to this. Going to hang with him on Saturday.

one of the best comments ever, lover. thanks.

smorales, liked that one but ron's shackle me not part was always my jam. really need to do a post on that guy. not so sure about the voiceovers... i really just think it was an outlet for tony mag to talk even more about how much he likes ramps with a lot of vert cause it makes him feel like he was just flying around. haha that dude said that same shit everytime he got within 5 feet of a microphone. drove me nuts.

bobjohn, didn't ray simmonds and jeff petit both do one in their part. been a minute since i've seen shackle me not, but i distincly remember simmonds busting one out while wearing a painter's cap... you know, in between launching over ladders and cracking his head on a frontside. part was so ill.

brennand's coming. almost ended up doing him instead of steve on this one...

eric, thought about doing a peterka one but dude hardly had anything... maybe two skate ads and some snowboard joints... i'll see what i can do.

was poorhouse a division of something else? can't remember.

seb, totally right about the motors in those sequences... haha.
frame 1: crouch
frame 2: guy jumping with random placement of upside-down board underneath his feet.
frame 3: land
and that article was about flatground tricks.

jason, i'd put the house on rodney having at least one in those early bones brigade joints. dude probably invented that trick in 1983 or something. gotta feel bad for rodney sometimes... its like some of his achievements don't even count sometimes. and yeah, ronnie is in #177, sometime in december.

thanks larry, what's steve up to these days? and was it a knee injury that took him out.

thanks for the comments fellas.

i think poorhouse was a spin off of circle a skateboards?????
not sure though???

Very cool guys, thank you for looking out for a homie. Still skating with a bit my son and if needed can still throw down a tre-flip. HAHA!

thanks for the comment, steve. mucho respect.

always up for requests although it takes me a little while to actually get one together...

I hope to be able to toss a 360 flip well into my 70's.

Stever Ortega on cbi. So sweet!

hell yeah Steve Ortega i used to skate with Steve i grew up in Vista, CA i also had a poorhouse board and i also had that picture of him doing that 360 flip on my wall.. he took that picture at R.B.V. high school in vista..yeah if in wasnt for that knee injury Ortega easily would have went far he also had the first 360 flip on video.. for a street skater.. and were not talking freestyle skaters"

Hokus is essential to watch, for anybody. I put it on the other day for a friend who is 45 and just started skating 5 years ago, he asked "if this was a recent video and everybody is just skating old boards," because most of the tricks have come full circle. when we informed him that in was from 1989 he was shocked that that type of stuff was going on back then.
Steve Ortega, I used to idolize in the late 80's early 90's, but he never got much coverage that was deserved to him, I remember drawing that lip slide in the ditch above with Hensley and just stared at it forever thinking about the pop-out and why can't we have a spot like that by my Mom's house. I still have that drawing. He does a Fakie 360 flip & a front foot impossible in Shackle Me Not. Years before both tricks were cool.

Nice to see one of the more underrated skaters from that era get some respect. Ortega ripped it up back then. Glad to hear he still skates!

Steve, you were the ruler! I had a ton of fun staying at your house and skating with you and Hensley. Its been a long time. I'm living in Boulder Co now and studying quantum physics. I tried to track down Hensley last time I was in Vista. Haven't seen his band play. My Gma is living in Vista now with my uncle. I still have a board. I'll try to track you down too.

damn... is that "friend of smokey the bear" ray simmonds!?!

if so... whoa! dude, your part with petit in shackle me not is STILL amazing. way, way... way ahead of its time. and in reference to the comments above, i think you and petit both bust tre flips in that section if i remember correctly.

I don't have Steve's email but I'll forward this on to Jason Rogers (he's JRog in the comments above) and maybe he knows Hensley's email or of Steve's whereabouts.

This just made my day, had seen this post before of course, but new comments from Ortega himself etc. was sick. Super Good alright, me and my mates used to buzz out on your section. Dope

STEVE is also a badass bass player...I was fortunate enough to play Drums for a few minutes in his band Triple Circus...He seriously shredded on the bass, and sang...Total Mad Respect and Luv to my old friend Steve Ortega!!

Hokus pokus blew my mind……if all the riders were wearing white tops, stonewashed jeans and low cut shoes, you would’ve been fooled into thinking it was shot between early to mid 90s. It’s how furrrressshhhh, that vid was.
