chrome ball incident #250: check the technique

one of the best all-around skaters of the 90s and another one who I really think heads slept on back in the day, jason rogers.

i was really hoping for his next generation part but this one will have to do.

such a short interview, i really think they just decided to ask Jason a few questions as an easy excuse to run a bunch of his photos...

was so stoked on this dude at the time.

Not trying whatsoever to be an asshole here, but has anyone ever wondered why most Vert legends are all revered, remembered and celebrated, and rarely if ever forgotten---while such a pretty large batch of early street guys have fallen through the cracks to the point where if you were asked "who is Scott Pazelt?", most people would be like "who the eff is he?"

Sick - i remember the JR interview, stoked on this one - loads of memories of that time came back (damn I sound like some kinda grandpa). Anyway, cool post. Can we have some more not so forgotten mighty Rob Welsh - please.

Is this an april fools post?
Are you Scott Pazelt?

I remember most dudes from pretty much the first magazines and videos that i had, wherein those were full of vert skaters. It's easy to remember those dudes cause there were so few.

Can we get a Scott Pazelt post?

Jason Rogers. Stoked! After he got his pony tail under control, he was great! Style improved immensely for Next Generation... skating to that Gangstarr song was so tight. The noseblunt/blunt line on that miniramp. Good shit!

Unfortunately Rogers was a late vert guy--the most forgotten group of all. Somehow, Berra was the only one to escape the fate of Rogers and Alf (not that they're on crack or anything--I think they're both doing well).

Jeff Jones and Aaron Snyder should have shared an April fools post, if you know what I mean.

Can't believe I made it onto my favorite blog! You made my month man!

And yeah that interview was goofy. I didn't even know the guy and I was hella stoned. That and I had shot all my good stuff with Sturt but skateboarding was so in the crapper that they wouldn't pay him his going rate of $500 a photo.

Thanks for the props fellas. The tail end of us vert dudes was a huge thing to get out from under. That and HSt getting crushed by how rad World was. But whatever. Take what you can get. Jason Carney post? Thanks again...

No Silly, I'm not Scott Pazelt--although I bought and paid for a Pazelt Gene Simmons Deck once on ebay for my collection (was it a maple deck?) that the jerk never sent me, so I got hosed, hence me remembering Scott Pazelt as one of the myriad of Street guys who fell through the cracks, just like wee little Dave Coyne.

Jason Rogers replies. How cool is that!

Is JR part Asian? Doesn't quite look like a white guy.

jr was sick as fuck. didn't he do arcade? i was privy to witness him, kris markovich and jordan richter annihilating some steel 8' mini in houston circa 92.

damn... thanks Jason. Been meaning to have you up here for a minute but the combo of not being able to find that ill cadillac double-set joint in addition to your next clip not being posted-up anywhere (damn shame) stalled it for a while. I'll get working on a carney joint in the next few weeks, no doubt. thanks again, dude. mucho respect.

always wondered, was that lowrider you sported in Lick yours?

cheaps, another wu-welsh was already in the works.

thanks fellas.

old school, i think there's a few things involved here.... in the vert boom times, there was much more money, many less companies/pros, and i also think it may something to do with dudes having the same graphics for years at a time... a graphic really became a part of their image and really became lodged in your brain... there are several 80s vert dudes that i never saw skate but surely remember their graphics, therefore remembering them. plus those vert dudes were treated like rockstars where the majority of the early street skaters were essentially high school kids in parking lots. that's all i can come up with.

i didn't even know scott pazelt turned pro.

@Keith: Half Japanese, Half Irish...ish. Kenny Anderson and I are Brezinski's best men because he says he wants a Japanese guy as his best man and the two of us put together make one.

@Jeremy: Yeap I did Arcade, do Autobahn now...
In fact, I'm about to order the first batch of Arcade II decks. You heard it here first! SAD needs wood! heh...

@Chops: yeah man, I never thought I was cool enough to make the incident. Just sparked on all your scans. I have a stack of magazines myself that I cant bring myself to throw away so I've been carting em from house to house for over 15 years. haha. That car in the beginning of that damn opus of a part was Eric Conner's. Remember that dude? I had a '63 Impala that I didnt want to cut out for drolics. It's in the background of a line at Serra red curbs. Before the rims got put on and subsequently stolen.

Anyway, tight Carroll post above. Mikey is the one of the all time best as everyone here I'm sure knows...got you perma-bookmarked man. Keep up the good work! And if anyone is working at a shop, holler at Arcade II when you see it drop!

JRog said...

Yeah June Cate! Whattup homie! Whattup Ricks! I was thinking of trying that trick the other day. Dunno if I can bend like that no mo...Whoever, get at me on the facebook so we can stop blasting Chops comment's section.

Thanks again for doing this site! Maybe now I can bring myself to throw away the 200 lbs. of magazines I have in storage...

the blunt to backside grab was always sick. used to see john drake bust 'em shortly after jason's risk it part dropped... i would've bit 'em too if i could've.

hey jason, is sad getting a board on arcade 2?

what up june cate... i'm buggin' out!

JRog said...

Yeah Chops he's getting one. I'll send you one of the first editions. A thanks for scanning like a maniac...gonna be a few weeks though.

Hey Jason,

I did a whole blog post on wood shops. Take a look. Maybe you might see something that works for Arcade II.

Weren't the H-Street/Evol boards Taylor Dykema?

I was just thinking back about Next Generation... Paterka, Ocean and your parts were definitely the ones I watched the most. Koston's part had a bit too much ramps LOL

JRog said...

Well we are trying this US wood that one of our suppliers has that is a real good deal. If it works well then we're running it, if not we can get girl/choc stuff (ish?) which is what ive been riding lately and getting really used to. Bareback is also an option, we helped dude get it off the ground so he hooks us up. But like the price difference is something like 30%. Tough to call. At least at first...nice blog you got going there btw. Informative post on the wood and spitfire soup sounds tasty!

Yeah HStreet stuff was Taylor first but then it split with that other stuff that was like squarer on the routing. I think Sal's board was the first to use it. It was way flatter. My first board was maybe the second HSt deck done on that wood.

As far as Next Gen...yeah that was a good one. Funny how a lot of tricks from then are coming back. Just troll Chad's part and take one of of his tricks to a bank and dumbfound everyone! But yeah, I still feel guilty for having last part in that vid. Getting over these things lately though. Like I feel weird even posting and speaking on this shit a little. And Im a 35 year old with a 15 year old daughter for chrissakes! heh...

But yeah, back then skating was transforming so fast that my part starts off with a varial 180 over a spine and ends with a pressure flip down a gap. Board shapes all over the map...And when the vid hit, pressure flips were all but kaput. Amazing time period.

Ive considered trying to get a documentary together about it. Just like from 1986-1996...that decade was insane. Went from early grabbing off launch ramps with no nose on your board to nollie backside nosebluntslides down handrails. Its amazing and kids now just dont know now what it was like seeing like say, Salman skating switch for the first time. It was mindblowing. And itll never happen again...

damn Im a wordy bastard...Im going to try a blunt melon next time I skate this ramp down the street. I'll post er up on my youtube if I get it which is here
http://www.youtube.com/user/jojojohanson Might be a horrorshow though...

Cheers fellas, shooting SAD later today...thought ya'll get a kick out of that. Piece.

fairways and flips, represent!

yeah jason, i often trip on just how fast skating evolved in the early 90s... its really insane. that fact that public domain to questionable only took 4 years (88-92) is mindblowing... look at that progression! it takes longer than that to make most videos these days.

and thanks for the hook-up. ever thought about re-issuing your old MLK graphic? shit was tight.

JRog said...

Man believe or not I got some shit for that board. The indy ad with the "end racism" shirt didnt help either. There was still this norcal weirdness going on so I figured that was the best venue. heh. Glad that shit is all but cut out of skateboarding now.

I wont have boards on Arcade, but you never know...Id like to have a Steve H. board for my wall somehow. Bro models/Arcade Alumni series idea being thrown around.

You know, Id love to get your guys opinion on shit here and there...anyone out there with suggestions or ideas or just want to call me a fruitcake, my ichat is: boobyhelmet

Holler.

E.Ricks said...

yo jason, how about an eric ricks bro-model out by arcade...lmao....
hey it wass a suggestion...lol...

Keith said...

boobyhelmet? wtf? haha

JR, prior to seeing Next Gen, I didn't think you would have been the ender. After seeing it though, you definitely deserved it. No idea why that shit isn't anywhere on the internet. My copy is buried somewhere probably in my parents' basement.

Just saw this.

He the man! Always had a keen eye out for the JR ad or section, whatever. At that time I thought he would be bigger than Keith Richards. SO blown away by JR's skating. Innovative, jaw dropping. Damn pity that World had that effect skaters/companies. Progression always comes at a price.
