chrome ball incident #234: loose nut

"Once, Joe Johnson and Kevin Staab showed up at a contest with a crimping iron and a hair dryer. I shaved my head." -Jason Jessee

switching up speeds a bit from last week. gotten several requests for this dude over the last few months but never really knew how to work him in... then i realized that you can't. jason jessee just is.

didn't mean for this one to be so large... kinda just got carried away. style is so sick.

and am i crazy or at one point was he almost on blind?

on a personal note, jason's neptune model was the first board i ever had... with orange gullwings, bullet 66's, and horrific blue griptape. it weighed a ton and i couldn't do shit but i loved that board. you always remember your first.

curious what some of you guys had for a first board.

big up to my man Lucas and one Mr. Eric Ricks.

My first was a Toxic Dave Crabb pro model with orange grip tape. The wheels where Toxic Waste's and were really big and soft. The trucks were generic and broke quick so I got some used Trackers off a friend.

kind of sucks to date myself but...
Santa Cruz Eric Bork with a big blue eyeball, Krux, black panther bearings and some wheels. Gave the complete to an old friend who was riding a costco x-games setup. Pretty sure he still has it.

yeah jason jesse rips. that sadlands might be the new desktop.

First was a Gator hand me down in perfect condition from an older skater, think it must have been the time just after his incident. Cockroach wheels. cant remember the trucks.

Jason Jesse is amazing. Totally his own thing.

thanks for the gonz/jessee screen saver. 1st new board was a vision (mini) john grigley with tracker six-tracks and oj's. a gift from my mom for NOT going back home to see my grandparents. either the flight was to much or i was just a pain in the ass. thanks mom!

great post! Jason Jesse is a true skateboarder.
my first setup was a used powell with some grind kings already ground to the axle and two slimeballs and two world wheels. I still have it somewhere.

My first board was a used Vision Psycho Stick mini with Gullwings and pink Crossbones and bright pink grip. I rode that thing until there was no nose or tail.

was he nearly on blind?

My first board was a gift from my Uncle who lived in S.F. It came from Skates on Haight and was made by Suregrip International. The graphic was a brick wall with "Kilroy was Here" written on it in white paint. It had big red wheels. The deck is still in my loft. The box it arrived in contained my first Thrasher too, it had a Del Mar article and Tommy G was on the cover

nice post, keepin it grandpa for us oldies!!

1st set up was kinda predictable..

pink hawk mini with blue gullwings (how wack were they) and black bullets (i think) and german bearings, the only cheaper alternative to swiss...black grip with the dragon logo cut out...plus all the cheese on the rails tails and nose, gutter jumpers and copers, all in pink...pretty toy

all in all not that bad a set up cause it was a mini so it wasnt a big as a boat...still, didnt learn how to ollie on that fuker, mind u , i dont think tony could ollie at that time either!!

went on to a lance after, then some santa cruz's,which i remember thinkin was a bit more badass than powell...i had a JINX which was sick...remember JINX? i mean a batman grafic bak then was pretty tight, most graphs were pushead type shit. i loved that deck. santa cruz decks were deff the shit, tight team with jj, kendall, roskopp, obrien and...of course DRESSEN, that dude seriously ripped..

1] blue plastic
2] wal-mart blue shit-board(it was wood though!)
3] variflex wired
4] (finally)pink lance mountain, indys, street bones, black grip.

still ride indys, though dlx is the move for boards and wheels (krooked/real and spitfire classics respectively)

Stinkbug never looked so good.

Red Mini Cab with Indy's black Rat Bones with NMB Bearings, black Gorilla Rib Rails and Borgy Copers. I got it from Fogtown (old SF skate shop that Phelps used to work at. Later became Concrete Jungle). This was around late '85

I had the parents that insisted I learned on a kmart board. It was red.

don't know why, i just always find this question interesting.

anonymous1, both mckay and way coming soon.

jason from oz, i remember hearing a rumor that he was switching over during the brief d way-period. he was featured along with a bunch of other world-dudes on way's first blind graphic... but he was wearing a santa cruz shirt. still not sure.

julianjason, i remember jinx. he's one of those dudes that i remember him and his boards, but never remember him anything he ever did skating-wise. kinda like spidey.

i find the rash of gullwings on people's first boards funny. i would later rock the street shadows (mainly cause of hensley) but those Pro 3's i had were garbage. weird how gullwing and tracker used to be thought of as so good while venture and thunder were hated on for a while.

good to see you back, jaycee. thanks everyone.

I did a post on my first pro set up. Tracker Ultralights were the worst. Kingpin's weren't removable so if you broke one, it was either buy a new baseplate or new trucks.

Here's that Danny Way graphic.

I never really knew much about Jason Jessee. Mainly because of the vert thing. Isn't there a Jason Jessee documentary?

tp said...

oh Gullwings, the only truck where I routinely cracked my baseplate while only being able to ollie a foot off the ground and weighing considerably less than I do now.

I have never cracked another baseplate since.

julianjason said...

yeah, i never saw a pic of jinx, actually i lie i think i remember him doing a crailtap on a mini with some wack bandanna on. but yeah, not known for his skillls, pure image!!

oh somethin i forgot to say bout my gullwings...they had a fuckin BUILT IN RISER PAD...yup, the base plate was about half an inch thick so you didnt have to bother with risers, except when risers were out, so were the gullwings...SHIT!!

avisualsound said...

Natas kaupas SMA blacktop, one Indy one plastic orange truck (later on my grandpar ran over my board and I tended to let him believer that the truck he broke was an Indy too), and two orange Oj2s in the front, two white way bigger Hosoi rockets on the back (for the dragster effect, and cause the only shop that had skate stuff in our town only had two wheels of each).

Did you mean THE Eric Ricks? Been wanting a post on the most-color coordinated man in 1993's skateboarding for a minute. I felt close cause were I guess what you'd call "brow bros" ha ha.

chops said...

keith, still haven't been able to track down that doc but the trailer looks insane.

i started out with pro 3's and would later come back for a hensley-induced second-round with the street shadow hysteria. both had those built in risers... and yes, my 120 lb., 13 year-old body broke them with alarming frequency.

though not as bad as tracker ulralites.

had that board, seb. third board i ever had... loved it. and yeah, #208.

I vaguely remember Santa Cruz black tops. Was it a fiberglass ply as the top ply? I remember boneite was total bullshit. Like a layer of black cardboard. It's amazing that to this day, 7 plies of maple is still the gold standard.

Benson said...

hah this is pretty weak but my first board was the keith gruber sonic the hedgehog vision board. and CLEAR griptape...so weak.

Thanks to my man Chops for keeping the name alive!!

Long live Jason Jessee. Great selection. Was always intrigued with him since I saw that classic ad of him doing a frontside air with a hockey mask on.

First real board was a trade with a friend. Roskopp II with Kryptonics 63.5's. After a few months the kid wanted it back. After he saw I had removed the rails and the tailbone and had actually skated it instead of just rolling around, he was so pissed that he destroyed the board I have him. Was fine with me... it was some board from KMart... and before long I had another board.

Tyson said...

My first was a Sims Kevin Staab. It was green and had a pirate on it. All the hardware was stripped from a shitty Kmart board (which technically was my first but usually people never count their budget boards as the first)
