chrome ball incident #188: extra prolific

gonz comeback interview featuring the first kickflip over his namesake gap, a sequence jim greco would later cite as the very definition of the word "mob".

granted it seemed like forever at the time (mainly due the swift level of trick/trend progression during this period) but gonz was only out of the scene for about two years...

Maybe my favorite thrasher cover ever, I wish the interview was longer though...

great cover.

miss the days when people's shirts were cool and not just product placement.

2 year absence... seemed like a lot longer than that! Those ATM boards were terrible! Worst concave I'd ever seen. Never rode an Alva/New School/ATM board in my life.

I don't know what made me love this post so much, but I saw it first thing this morning and have been having one of those "What would Gonz do?" kind of days.

Thrasher cover is so good. Do you remember a photo of Gonz doing either a fs invert or eggplant on a 70's Logan Earth Ski? I think it was in the "Do I look like a street skater" issue of Thrasher. Wish I hadn't lost that one.

hairfarmer... i think i know the one you're talking about but i'm honestly not sure where it is... real/krooked-era gonz all kinda blurs together for me... i'm not sure if it was in that thrasher though, or if it was, it was reprinted somewhere else...

I think this was still from the 60/40 days... They had an article of dudes doing stuff on that board. Lance was in there too. I'm almost certain it was from '94.

I was there when he kickflipped the Gonz. Jamie Thomas was trying it too and almost landing it. I kinda remember Shawn Young coming really close too, but that might have been another day. I remember we were all rooting for Gonz to make it cause, well shit, it's Gonz and they didn't call it the Gonz channel for nothing. So every time Jamie tried it I think most everyone kinda held their breath. He came super close to making it too and it was just a matter of riding away for him to be the first to do it. I remember Mark wasn't even really coming close to making it and I was standing next to Greg Hunt at the time and we were just talking about something. We were watching it the whole time and at one point Greg kinda turns to me enough so that he had his back to everything and then out of nowhere Mark makes it. The whole place just blows the fuck up with everyone cheering! Greg turns to me with the most bummed out look and said something like "dude, I missed it!". I remember Jamie looked kinda bummed too, cause I'm sure he wanted to be the first guy to do it. But I think he understood that the universe kinda has to work in that way. You know?

On a side note, I was skating with Mark one time and he told me he liked the way I did kickflips. One of the best days of my life! haha
